Your task
for this paper is to choose a director from the list below, watch
his/her films, and then explain the auteur theory and present an
argument as to whether or not your director is an auteur. This will
require you to find extensive background information on your director
and their films in addition to viewing them multiple times.
You may choose from any of the directors listed below. All are
currently working in the industry and have lots of current articles and
research material written about them. You must watch at least three of
the four films assigned to that director:

Quentin Tarantino: Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Inglourious Basterds, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

You must use this as a cited source in your paper, but you
will need to include at least three other sources (more on that below.)

You must use the Sarris article as the basis of your
paper. Sarris breaks the theory into three “concentric circles†and
your paper should do the same. Failure to use the Sarris article is an
automatic point deduction. Your paper must be 850 words or more. You
must include a title page and a works cited page(s), but those DO NOT

You will be graded on factual information, research, organization,
grammar, proper formatting, and citations. Never use the word “Iâ€, these
are research papers not analysis papers or journals.
Your papers should be organized into paragraphs and include detailed
descriptions of the work for the cinematographer you have chosen. The
overall organization should be:
Paragraph #1 – Intro of your paper ideas and thesis
statement of the paper (no bio or details yet, just introduce the topic
and ideas for the paper.)
Paragraph #2 – A short biography of the director
Paragraph #3 – Description and assessment of auteur theory aspect #1 – technical competence
Paragraph #4 – Description and assessment of auteur theory aspect #2 – distinguishable personality
Paragraph #5 – Description and assessment of auteur theory aspect #3 – interior meaning
(Additional
paragraphs and examples/observations if desired. You may add paragraphs
within the tech aspect sections as well if you feel you need more than
one paragraph.)
Final Paragraph – Summation of overall thoughts, ideas, and conclusion. NO NEW EXAMPLES.
All papers need to be written in Times New Roman 12 Point Font, black
text, and double-spaced. You must use the MLA format and cite your
sources within the body of the text. If you have not previously written
research papers you will need to consult an MLA style manual. This is a

Here’s an MLA style paper with tips for an example. Remember, the one exception is I want a title page with:

You will need to find sources for your research. I would recommend
the RVC library and you can search for material there online. Your
research doesn’t need to come from our library, it is just a good place
to start and use.
On the main RVC website scroll down and you’ll find a Library button:
Click on it and a Library main page will come up with a search tab. Use that to find materials appropriate for your paper:
You must use in-text citation for all research or outside information you use in the paper.
MLA style in-text citations are required for any and all ideas or
research you include that is not your own. All research papers must
include at least three different primary sources listed on your works
cited page, none of which may come from the textbook. No works cited
within the text will result in an automatic point deduction. No works
cited page at all would result in an automatic point deduction as well. A
minimum of three citations in the paper is required, and at least one
from each source cited.
You should cite any and all films you watch as well. Here’s the proper MLA style for doing that: “List
films by their title. Include the name of the director, the film studio
or distributor, and the release year. If relevant, list performer names
after the director’s name.”

No works cited page at all would result in an automatic
point deduction as well. A minimum of three citations in the paper is
required, and at least one from each source cited.
You must use credible and vetted sources. Use of personal or
non-affiliated blogs, editorials, user-generated content (such as wikis,
IMDb.com, Dictionary.com) or any source that resembles these will
result in a substantial point deduction.
In general, for academic writing, a credible source is one that is
unbiased and is backed up with evidence. Use this checklist to determine
if your research is credible or not:
Is the source in-depth (more than a page or two), with an abstract, a reference list, and documented research or data?
Who is the audience (researchers, professors, students, general population, professionals in a specific field)?
What is the purpose of the source (provide information
or report original research or experiments, to entertain or persuade the
general public, or provide news or information specific to a trade or
industry)?
Who are the authors? Are they respected and well-known
in the field? Are they easily identifiable? Have they written about
other similar topics? What are their credentials?
Is the source reputable? Is it published on a
reputable, non-biased web or news site, or in a peer-reviewed, scholarly
journal, and not from a editorial, blog, or wiki?
Is the source current for your topic?
Is there supporting documentation (graphs, charts, illustrations or other supporting documentation)?
Again, there are many books in the RVC library on this subject and
articles online from vetted sources like American Cinematographer and
the Hollywood Reporter. If you aren’t sure if your source will be
accepted send me the link and I’ll let you know.
All papers will be turned in online via the EAGLE assignment
dropbox and no late papers will be accepted for any reason. When you
submit a paper it must be in the .pdf file format. NO OTHER FORMATS WILL
BE ACCEPTED.
Your paper is due on Monday, July 25th by 10:00pm.
The week after you have submitted each of these papers, please post in the Research Paper Discussion a 75 word (or more) summary of your findings. You are then required to respond to at least two posts by your classmates by the paper discussion due date. For these replies you do not need outside weblinks or questions included for your classmates.
