In 500 words answer the following question based on the assigned reading from Boxer, Spanish and Portuguese Women.
Synthesize the author’s perspective on major historical developments shaping women’s identities in colonial Latin America. In an original analysis using examples from the text, discuss how women resisted, challenged and transcended oppressive customs, practices, and institutions. Highlight your interpretation by using at least one direct quotation to support your arguments–but use no more than a single sentence from the passage–making sure to contextualize the quote clearly and carefully for the reader.

You will be answering the following post (500 words):
In chapter 2 called ‘’Spanish and Portuguese America’’ we see the change that occurs after Columbuse went for the expedition with his voyages. We learn that women weren’t allowed to go on these expeditions only after the fact that men were allowed to go. How this led to a change in the society that they created for women. It creates a harmful social change for women in Latin America.
It begins with interracial marrage. It was something that was not allowed during these times. In the chapter it states ‘’In hispaniola itself, and later bin Cuba, puerto Rico, and jamaica, the aboriginal inhabitants were were extirpateed and their place taken down by West African slaves. Many of these later gained their freedom in the course of time and there was much concubinage and some intere-marriage between Europeans, Africans, and mestizos.’’, there is a larger demographic of people of color in certain regions because of the amount of people that were taken into slavery. Which is why there is an increase of interacial marriages.
Views came to be placed which led to what the standards were. Women were to marry at a young age. The Castilian Crown is where we see these views being placed onto Latin society. For an example on page 38 it states “The Castilian Crown also legislated against unmarried girls going out to the Indie, unless as members of the family of an emigrant or an official posted to the colonies, or a maid-servant employed by such.” the unfair treatment that women went through. If they were not married then they would be forced to work as a maid. The New World that they were building was something that caused a negative impact on women when it came to social class.
Throughout the chapter we also hear of stories of challenges that women faced. One of the stories was by Dona Catalina and her family shows how they fight back from these injustices however it did lead to violence. For an example it states “Even though convicted of having murdered thirty-nine persons in this way, nothing much happened to ‘La quintrala’. She had to leave her estate and remain under house arrest at Santiago” She did pay for these murderers however it also shows that how much of a mistreatment women faced as a collective to the point where it got violent. These men were people that did treat women unfair.
Overall Latin America’s history shows the stories, especially womens, the amount of challenges they faced. Social class and race played a big role when it came to the inequality that they faced. Being forced into arranged marriages or suffering the consequences of being into the poor labor force that they gave. Lastly, the reactions they get in return which isn’t always passive like the story of Dona Catalina. Every part since the beginning led to the inequality that women had. However we see women of color face more of these challenges in Latin America.
