QUESTION

Summary

Stephen Greenhouse in his article “Yes, America is rigged against workers” argues that the America’s labor market is inherently meant to serve a given people and not the workers who toil to generate the immense value that is reported and quoted in most sources. According to the author, despite being one of the major superpowers, America trails its peers in developing a properly structured labor market where workers are compensated commensurate with the effort they offer in labor as compared to other European countries as well as ensuring proper mobility of workers within the labor market.

In the article, Stephen Greenhouse cites certain fundamental and as well important ingredients of advanced labor markets such as weekly working hours, hourly wage rate, vacation (positive reinforcement for workers), unionization of workers both in the public and private sectors, an gender pay gap among others. In support of his viewpoint, Greenhouse (2020) reckons America as having among the worst compensation of workers in terms of minimum wage rate. Moreover, the author propounds that “anti-worker exceptionalism” accounts for a great reason as to why American workers are worse off compared to their peers from Europe which is largely due to the extractive nature of labor unions as an institution. The author blames corporations for their uncalled-for aggression towards labor union. With weaker labor unions, most Americans have a very low bargain and have to bow down to their employers’ demands in most cases.

According to the author, several Americans are highly discontented with the current conditions of the labor market. Most people have thoughts of joining labor unions as a way of addressing their pleas that have mounted over the years into some sort of a norm. In concluding, the other asserts that despite being very tough to reverse the current condition of the labor market, it is prudent that Americans rise up above their comfort zones and add their voice to the already existing ones, have a place in policymaking, being part of corporate boards among others. These ventures will make it easy to formulate policies that favor the average American while addressing the woes that have become a norm with no place to turn to.

Although I agree with Greenhouse that The United States does not have national laws guaranteeing paid maternity leave, I contend to his point that The US doesn’t entirely provide for paid maternity leaves as some employers, acting on the company’s culture and modus operandi, ensure their workers are guaranteed such. Some states like California, Georgia, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have provisions that guarantee workers paid maternity leave contrary to the conclusive claim that “The United States is the only advanced industrial nation that doesn’t have national laws guaranteeing paid maternity leave. In light of the nature of the US as a nation, there are two types of government: regional (states) and federal. Despite being the unification point of Americans, the constitution may not exclusively touch on everything given the changing trends of the society over time. However, some issues are handled by the regional governments depending on need such as workers’ conditions which may be unique in each state like in this case the issue of paid maternity leave.

Although I disagree with some of what Greenhouse says, I fully endorse his final conclusion that Americans wont stop thinking that the system is rigged until they feel they have an effective voice in the workplace and policymaking. Given the weight of evidence cited and gauging from my personal experience, the wage gap in The US has greatly risen. Moreover, there has been an increased trend of wealth accumulation within a very small proportion of Americans while the vast majority have been pushed out of the labor market. Disrupting the status quo requires, as it has been with other issues like women suffrage, to have a voice in the decision-making table as well as taking part in formulating policies that define the labor market in the US at large.
