ENG 123 Journal Guidelines and Rubric

This week, you spent some time reflecting on persuasion in your everyday life, and you shared some potential topic ideas with your peers and instructor. But why is persuasion so important?

Let’s think about that a little bit in this journal assignment. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

1. After exploring the Opposing Viewpoints Database and reviewing your brainstorming activity, identify two issues that are related to Human Resources:

a. Write a fully developed paragraph for issue one (5–8 sentences).

i. Explain at least two clear arguable sides to the issue.

ii. Explain how the issue relates to your field or degree, or your potential field or degree.

b. Write a fully developed paragraph for issue two (5–8 sentences).

i. Explain at least two clear arguable sides to the issue.

ii. Explain how the issue relates to your field or degree, or your potential field or degree.

2. After exploring the arguments related to your issues, take a moment to consider the bigger picture. Then, briefly reflect (in 1 to 2 paragraphs) on the importance of persuasion for the issue you are most likely to write about.

Be specific in your assignment; this information will help guide you as you work on your project in the coming weeks.

a. Identify which side you might argue if you plan to pursue this issue in your final

persuasive essay.

b. Identify your potential audience and why your topic would be relevant to them.

Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Submit the assignment as a Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins.

Remember that these need to be two separate, distinct topics, rather than just the two sides of a single topic. It’s important to propose two topics so that you’ll have a fallback if something doesn’t work out with your preferred topic. Note that the rubric requires that you propose these two separate topics, so even if you are very focused on a single topic and are fairly sure that’s the one you want to write about, you absolutely must propose a second possible topic in order to get full points on the assignment.

As you’re working on brainstorming, I want to encourage you all to think through these questions:

1: Is the problem/topic related to my current career or major?

2. Does it exist within my field in general? That is, is it a problem that is not limited to my own particular experience or workplace?

3: Is it debatable? Is it something that has at least two arguable sides?

4: Do I think I’ll be able to write at least six full-length (5-8 sentences each) paragraphs about this topic? (The final persuasive essay rubric requires the essay have an introduction, three body paragraphs, an opposing viewpoint paragraph, and a conclusion).

5: Is this topic something that is researchable? That is, would there likely be published sources relating to this topic that can be used to support my opinion on it?

You should be able to answer “yes” to all these questions before settling on a topic.

Note that while the first question does ask that the topic be related to your field or career, the second pushes the topic away from your own experience. In the discussion board this week you’re analyzing an experience of your own, but the topics you propose in the journal should be separate from your own experience. They should be topics that exist within your field as a whole, rather than at your specific place of work or in your own experience.

The third question in that list is vitally important when working on finding a topic for a persuasive essay. If you’re focusing on something that is not debatable, then you’re setting yourself up to not be able to present actual argumentation. There needs to be some room for debate within your problem. Just as an example of this, consider these two potential topics:

Topic 1: The annual rainfall in the United States.

Topic 2: The causes of the increased annual rainfall in the United States over the last five years.

Topic 1 is a weak topic for a persuasive essay because there’s not much room for debate there. The annual rainfall is what it is. The second topic takes that broad focus (annual rainfall), and it adds a layer of causation, which is debatable (causes of an increase in annual rainfall). If I chose Topic 2, I’d be able to argue for what I think is the cause of that increase, and I’d be able to argue against other interpretations of the cause of the increase. That sets me up to be able to persuade my audience and fulfill the obligations of the essay. Remember that there is a fundamental difference between informing and persuading. While some essays do attempt to inform an audience about a topic, that is not your goal this term. It is very difficult to meet the various assignment requirements if you don’t have a clear argumentative/persuasive point that you’re making.

The fifth question is also very important. We’ll be working through how to conduct scholarly research and how to find and evaluate sources in the coming weeks, but do make sure that you’re proposing topics that are likely to have research relating to them. Your 1-3 discussion board focuses on personal experiences relating to persuasion, and your journal should focus on topics relating to your field of study or career, but it’s important to make sure that those topics are ones that have been researched. If you focus on too narrow of an experience for your topic (a personal experience you’ve had in the workplace, for example), then you won’t be able to find sources in the coming weeks. That isn’t to suggest that you can’t draw from your own experiences in your field. You absolutely can do that, and oftentimes that’s how students initially encounter topics for persuasion. You should simply make sure that in your journal you’re broadening your focus to the topic itself rather than to your isolated experience. Your essay should primarily be written in the third person, focusing on the issue itself and not on your own interaction with the issue, so it’s important that you select something that other people are thinking about, debating, etc.

Also do take note of the length requirements. As you’re looking into these potential topics you want to make sure that you are finding enough material to support those six full-length paragraphs. Remember that the bulk of your essay will be focused on two things: sub-points that support your large argument and evidence from sources that support the sub-points. Make sure that you have some ideas of supporting points that could help to build your essay.help with questions: online nursing assignment help

The Belhaven Academic Help page has numerous resources to assist and guide students with assignments and research. It has an array of videos, guides, and tutorials on math, formatting styles, citing sources, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. There are also links to guides, instructions, and writing workshops. This page seems to be the total package and truly encompasses academic help.

Having these resources in one convenient location is a great asset, and it is a testament to Belhaven’s commitment to each student’s academic success. However, Belhaven’s commitment to Christianity is just as important, and there are many spiritual resources available on the Belhaven Academic Help page that coincide with Belhaven’s mission of preparing students academically and spiritually.

Since it’s been a while that I’ve had writing assignments, I found Zotero, under the Resource Management heading, very interesting. Having a research tool that collects and organizes data into sortable collections will come in handy with writing assignments, and it even creates references and bibliographies!

I also found the resources under the Writing Assistance heading very useful in providing me with new information as well as reminding me of things that I had forgotten. I found the Grammarly tutorial to be helpful. It included far more than just merely checking for grammatical errors. It has additional applications for Chrome, Windows, and Microsoft Office, and it automatically saves all submitted documents in its cloud. I will use it significantly as I continue with my graduate program as well as with work assignments in my career going forward.

Belhaven’s Blazenet academic help page contains various links to aid students through their journey while in college. Upon reviewing the website and various links, I learned that this website is where people who are enrolled at Belhaven can receive writing assistance. This academic help page will aid students in formatting an APA style paper, as well as, citing references. Also, it aids in formatting an MLA style paper, as well as, citing references. This webpage also has a section that offers tutorials for the 2016 and 2013 versions of Microsoft Word. In addition, Belhaven’s Blazenet academic help page also has resources to help students with the Bible throughout their time at the university. Moreover, the Belhaven’s Blazenet academic help page has a section that contains links for math tutorials if a student is struggling. Subsequently, something I would like to learn on the Belhaven’s Blazenet academic help page is higher level math instead of just Algebra basics and Algebra 1.

A useful resource on the Belhaven’s Blazenet academic help page that will help me during my educational journey is the APA Assistance section. The APA Assistance section contains links that will aid in formatting a paper in APA. It also has videos on how to reference different type of sources in the APA format. When writing a paper, I will be using the APA paper template as a visual guide to show me what my paper is supposed to look like. Additionally, this section will assist me in how to reference different sources in the APA format. This resource would be beneficial with the various writing assignments in this course and throughout my academic career at Belhaven.Bullet points
