Evaluative Essay: Choosing the Stronger Argument
Once you have read your pair of articles, your task is to argue which article makes the stronger argument. You will likely find that both have merits and faults, so you are free to argue that Article A beats Article B on, say, organization or benefits on the matter of finances, but that Article B trumps Article A on using examples that will appeal to its audience or on the issue of student morale. Your thesis statement should present an argument explaining which article offers the stronger/more effective argument and how it does so. (Do not refer to articles in your essay as “Article A” or “Article B.” Introduce full titles and authors’ full names in your introduction. Afterwards, refer to articles by authors’ last names. Ex. “Jones’ tone…”)
In order to do this assignment justice, you will need to analyze each author’s appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos as well as each article’s rhetorical situation. Consider the author’s organization/structure – is s/he using any of the methods your book describes? Consider the strategies each author uses to support her/his argument. Are these strategies working well as employed? Why/why not? Is either article using any logical fallacies? Is either article failing to rebut a counterclaim? Is either article missing grounds for claims or warrants for evidence? (You may also consider doxa and kairos, but you are not required to do so.) Your essay should be 900-1200 words long (excluding the required Works Cited page) and conform to MLA 9 guidelines for formatting and citations (including in-text citations). You must perform rhetorical analysis of both articles to succeed in this assignment.
Do not offer your opinion on which side of the argument you believe to be correct, just, etc. Your goal here is to evaluate the rhetorical effect of each argument. You should not need to consult outside sources for this assignment.
I advise that you write paragraphs analyzing both authors’ strategies (e.g. tone, argumentative structure, etc.) together rather than dividing the essay by author or by appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. (One tactic may employ multiple appeals; if your essay is organized by appeal, the organization may get confused.)
Prewriting: You may find it helpful to begin by summarizing each article’s thesis and main points. Then track how each article handles points like finances or constituent/student reactions. Jot down all of your observations, then decide which are relevant, how to expand upon them/integrate them into your argument, and how to organize them. An outline will greatly help you out here. For an essay like this, rushing straight into a draft without prewriting can be dangerous for the quality of your work. I strongly suggest you spend some time with your articles and your thoughts before drafting.
