Students will write an op-ed on “the best direction for United States health care reform” that ties together the issues discussed in this course, the materials that you researched during your reflection papers, as well as information from your classmate student presentations. You may either take a broad position that talks about the healthcare system as a whole, or you can choose to focus on a specific component of the system or aspects of care. This paper must be kept to 1000 words or fewer… which will not be much space to make your argument. Again, this is an “opinion” piece, therefore I will not be grading on “correctness” of your opinion, rather on the content of the paper (i.e., how well you support your argument, and whether or not information is accurate and accessible for a non-public health savvy audience). For inspiration, you may want to research op-eds on health care in publications such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other credible news sources. Make sure to include references page at the end. APA format.
Goals:
Engage readers from the start of your piece
Assume your readers have little or no prior knowledge about the topic (i.e., they are not public-health-savvy).
Be forceful and persuasive, but fair. Try to avoid propaganda!!!
You will need to have evidence for the statements of fact presented in your paper.
Develop a logical flow of ideas.
