DMC: The following is a possible template for working on an essay that deals with literature, particularly if you have a specific literary work in mind. I’ll try to get up Anna’s instruction videos.
Introduction
Funnel into the main issue in focus in your essay and the research question. Explain why the focus and question is relevant to teaching ESL. Use the national curriculum and previous research to frame your study, that is, give the relevant research area. Note: greater specificity in relation to the national objectives is always better than being too general.
The focus question/problem formulation should be both specific enough to point to a focused study but broad enough to look at different aspects of the same question. These different aspects should form the tri-parte structure of the analysis.
Early reception
Write about the production context and early reviews of the fictional work.
See the instruction video on Blackboard.
Literature review
Write about previous scholarly research about the fictional work or related to similar studies about fictional works.
See the instruction video on Blackboard.
Theoretical framework
Focus on the types of questions that are relevant to the theory (funnel into your focus questions), give at least three perspectives on analytical concepts and present the underlying assumptions in the theory that is in focus.
Give an overview of what research is available in the specific or general field in teaching.
This framework is about describing how you intend to use the theory to answer and better understand the focus problem. This means that the concepts you choose from the theory should together provide a conceptual framework or structure for looking at your research problem.
See the instruction video on Blackboard.
Method
The stance in literary research is almost always interpretivist. This is where you describe the methodology you will be using. This section is not always included in literary analyses because most are textual analyses but include one per forma.
Analysis and discussion
The analysis and discussion are not kept separate in qualitative textual analyses. However, the analysis should have three sections that focus on three aspects of the overall question that is in focus.
See the instruction video on Blackboard
Concluding discussion
Rather than just having a short conclusion, literary analyses usually present the main points and summarize the main arguments in the previous discussions in a longer concluding discussion that looks at their combined impact in relation to the research question.
References
Use the MLA for both in-text references, footnotes and the reference list.
