Write a paper based on the research agenda linked.
The purpose of this paper should be to demonstrate an ability to perform your own research on a topic and to historically contextualize the issue you are addressing as well as your own argument
For this paper you will be writing a FOCUSED history on a topic of your choosing. This history will be centered around answering a research question. While this is not a typical “argumentative” essay you will be trying to prove to your readers that your answer is supported, that your question has stakes, and that they should be invested in the story you are telling/unearthing.
1. Generate and answer a research question that deals with a personal and/or underrepresented/mistold history.
This could get REALLY BIG REALLY FAST. Your question must be clearly defined. Remember you only have 7 double spaced pages. Try to find a question that is answerable in that short amount of time.
This question and its answer must be clearly stated in a working thesis statement.
All body paragraphs (and evidence) must be focused and organized, clearly relating back to your thesis.
2. Give an overview of the “ongoing conversation” around your topic and where your history fits into this conversation.
Are you countering conventional knowledge around this topic? Are you adding information that is new? Are you agreeing with specific scholars writing on this topic? What does your argument add to this ongoing conversation? What is your project providing that we wouldn’t have had previously?
While writing do the work of explaining this issue/your topic to potential beginners (like yours truly). What do we need to know to understand the trends you are outlining for us?
3. Clearly articulate the stakes of your argument:
This can be connected to Point 2. It should be clear why your argument is important and/or that your argument has an impact. What would your readers miss out on if they DIDN’T read your argument? What do they gain by reading your paper? Who is this important to and why/who is this project for?
4. Research sources appropriate to your topic, and effectively use those sources as evidence to support your arguments:
Although you may use course texts, you must research and use at least five outside sources. Within these four sources a good rule to stick to could be to aim to have at least one argument, background, and exhibit source. Cite all sources using MLA Format. Your paper must include proper parenthetical citations (in text citations) and a Works Cited page.
Remember when we talked about potential limitations to writing histories? Well this is where that discussion is going to come up. Think about your sources critically. Who are you listening to? What sources are you viewing as “valid” and why? What primary sources do you have access to?
At least three of your sources must be a scholarly book or a peer-reviewed article from a scholarly journal. You are encouraged to reference primary sources (political cartoons, interviews, advertisements, opinion columns, a short story, etc.).
