Introduction and Prompt
In this paper you will demonstrate your ability to use both primary and secondary sources to discuss the Bodhisattva Path. You may use the course lectures and readings in Gethin to explain how Mahayana Buddhism reinterprets the meaning of bodhisattva and envisions a path for the bodhisattva. Then discuss how primary sources explore how a person enters and develops the bodhisattva path.
Use these two primary sources in the module on the Bodhisattva Path:
Kamalasila’s essay, “The Necessity of Compassion,” pages 174-175 in bodhisattva-strong.pdf
Santideva’s essay, “Developing the Thought of Awakening,” pages 176-178 in bodhisattva-strong.pdf
Use these sources to show how Buddhists understood the ideal of the bodhisattva. Introduce the source you are using: who wrote it, when they wrote it, and their purpose in writing it (see John Strong’s introduction to each text). Then find appropriate quotes that support the points you are making in your paper.
IMPORTANT: Do not use the internet or any other sources outside of course materials. This creates a level playing field for all students. I know this assignment may be different from anything you have done before, so don’t worry – do your best.
Organization of the Paper

Every source, including secondary sources, must be documented in your paper, using in-line citations. Be sure to make these citations properly, for example: (Kraft 1998, 40). In the citation, Kraft is the editor of the book, it was published in 1998, and the information is on page 40. You can also cite module lectures: (Riggs 2021, lecture 10).
Include a list of works cited. Give the full bibliographic information:
