Write a 750-word essay that responds to one of the prompts below. Your essay must be thesis-driven, quote and explain the text, and incorporate (and build upon) a literary critic’s insights into a story. The essay must be constructed of paragraphs (at least six), and it must be formatted and documented in MLA style. You may build upon your Discussion Board responses, using material that you already wrote, as rough draft material for this essay.

William Faulkner said that, through Sarty Snopes in “Barn Burning,” he explored “The terrible handicap of being young, just heavy enough to keep him from soaring free of the world.” All the authors in this module explore something similar about the young: not only the terrible handicap of being a child, but also of being a child limited by social class standing and victims of absent or ineffective parents in certain times of conflict.
Choose one story and define the hardship that a main character faces because of youth and some version of powerlessness. How do cultural forces (parents or community) perpetuate a child’s impossible circumstances using a spoken or assumed code of behavior that might, in some cases, fail to serve a useful purpose. In other words, reflect the state of childhood in America during the middle of the 20th century, using one story of your own choosing as an extended example.
