Please answer all questions below.
1. Your state’s governor has put you in charge of water policy for the state. The
aquifer beneath your state has been over-pumped, and many wells have gone
dry. Agricultural production last year decreased for the first time in a generation,
and farmers are clamoring for you to do something. Meanwhile, the state’s
largest city is growing so fast that more water is needed for the burgeoning urban
population. What policies would you consider to restore your state’s water
supply? Would you try to take steps to increase supply, to decrease demand, or
both? Explain why you would choose such policies.
2. Reflect on the quotes at the beginning of chapter 15: “Water promises to be to
the 21st century what oil was to the 20th century: the precious commodity that
determines the wealth of nations” and “The wars of the 21st century will be fought
over water”. How do you think the demographic pressure on the water supply
could affect world trade, particularly the trade of agricultural products? Do you
think it could affect prospects for peace and stability in and among nations? How
so?
3. Discuss some ways that nations, companies and individuals can reduce the
threat to the marine environment from oil spills like we saw in the Gulf of Mexico
(and smaller, less-documented spills), as well as threats from petroleum-based
products such as plastic that continue to litter our oceans and shorelines.
