Choose ONE of the following topics to write about: (credit for 1 and 3 goes to the College Board) In all of these you must consider character and theme as part of the significance of the book. The central question from which to form your thesis/claim is in blue below.
1. Morally ambiguous characters – characters whose behavior discourages readers from identifying them as purely evil or purely good – are at the heart of many works of literature. This is the case in Orwell’s 1984. Write an essay in which you explain how one or two characters in the novel can be viewed as morally ambiguous AND why his or her moral ambiguity is significant to the book as a whole.
2. Would you rather be a Prole or a Party member in 1984? Why would that be your choice? Consider both the pros and cons of each group, then write an essay in which you discuss your argument in detail. You MUST choose one or the other (Prole or Party member) – you cannot say “it depends.” (Be careful – this one may seem easy, but you still need to meet the length requirement.)
3. In great literature, no scene of violence exists for its own sake. There are many scenes that confront readers with violence in 1984. Write an essay to explain how at least three violent scenes in 1984 contribute to the meaning of the complete work.
4. Some of the surveillance technologies that appear in 1984 are now realities that we take for granted, such as closed-circuit television cameras and GPS devices. Discuss the use of technology to control public and private behavior in 1984 and in the present. What limits do you think should be placed on the use of technology to avoid the kind of totalitarian excesses represented in 1984?
5. Choose the most useful methods (at least one, no more than three) that Big Brother utilizes to keep the population in line. Discuss why it is the most useful in comparison to the others. Support your argument with examples from the book and from real world population control techniques in contemporary society. For example, propaganda is utilized in Oceania and in China of today to great effect.
