Paper Outline /Introduction/Literature Review/Final Paper
The culminating project for this course is a research paper addressing a public health issue affecting Black America, its potential causes, and possible remedies. Course assignments are intended to help you develop and write your paper throughout the course with ample opportunity for feedback. Your final paper should be 10-15 pages. For this assignment draft a brief outline mapping out your paper.
Paper Title (can include a creative portion, such as a short quote or phrase that illustrates the paper’s content; all titles must indicate the paper’s content and scope
Introduction/Thesis Statement (1 page in final paper)
Why is this topic important? How will addressing this Black Health Issue improve the quality of life for Black People in America? Include statistics and facts to substantiate your claim. Your thesis statement should be one sentence – this is the hypothesis or argument derived from your preliminary readings that you will prove in this paper.
Historical Context (2-3 pages in final paper)
What is the historical context of this issue?
Are there important markers of different stages of this issue’s development?
If so, why were these significant events
Literature Review & Theoretical Context (4-5 pages in final paper)
Why is this an important issue? Outline your key sections within areas and list the readings you plan to use to substantiate your claim in APA format (citation of each source should be included in your references page this section).
Write your review of relevant literature (at least 20 primary sources) informing your problem. It should be clear how all of the studies you identify for review are connected to the question or topic addressed in your problem statement. Include the procedures you followed to identify the literature including search engines used, keywords, types of resources searched, and criteria for inclusion and exclusion.
Group the studies into categories/themes. Describe each theme or category of studies by analyzing and synthesizing the information they provide. This description should look across studies not just list them and consider the theoretical perspectives and empirical methodologies employed, strengths and weaknesses, findings, agreements and disagreements, and implications for your study.
Provide a concluding section that summarizes what the research as a whole leads you to believe about where there is agreement and disagreement around your problem of practice. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the literature as whole? How does the literature inform your study?
Summary of Evidence (2-3 pages in final paper)
Thinking back to your hypothesis, what do you hope to prove/demonstrate? What evidence will you provide to explore your hypothesis? Are there case studies you can use? Include contradictory evidence to test and challenge the validity of your hypothesis – it is expected that the hypothesis will be modified in some way when tested against empirical evidence.
Discussion/Conclusion
This section should include your proposed response to your selected Black Health Issue. What can be changed at the systemic level? How can we address bias in this arena? How can your proposal be scaled? What direction should future considerations/research take to further understand this issue? Where is there a gap in the research? Use examples of preexisting interventions from course readings.
