Nurses commit to lifelong learning to increase their patient outcomes and ultimately deliver high quality patient centered care to each patient encountered. Each patient is unique and requires an individualized plan of care. For this reason, the nurses must be well rounded and understand the best way to execute the patient’s treatment plans (Qalehsari, 2017). Committing to lifelong learning entails continuously learning and gaining experiences throughout their career. Technology is constantly evolving and there are ongoing advances in the healthcare field. Nurses must stay up to date with the most efficient and effective ways to deliver care to their patients.
Sigma Theta Tau International can facilitate nurses to advance their careers by offering the necessary resources to remain up to date with protocols, treatments, policies and other healthcare related issues (Drude, 2019). Staying up to date with these issues decreases medical errors and allows for nurses to build rapport with their patients as well as increasing their patients’ outcomes.

Lifelong learning encompasses a commitment to the healthcare world that is rapidly changing, increasingly complex, and demonstrates technological advancements. It is essential for nurses to commit to lifelong learning in relation to patients to ensure patient-centered care is thorough and appropriately changing as evidence-based practice continues to enhance the healthcare field. It is also important for nurses to commit to lifelong learning for organizations to prevent medical errors, ensure appropriate and healthy workplace conditions and prevent errors within nursing and organizations (Ahmad, 2014) Lastly, committing to lifelong learning can enhance an individual’s relation to the profession. Attempting to enhance and gain more knowledge can help nurses improve as providers and help assist in leadership, and research to grow as professionals. Organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau International can help nurses to use their knowledge and skills to advocate for themselves, and their patients. The healthcare field is an everchanging profession and ensuring constant improvement from nurses can help positively impact health outcomes.
