Earlier this week we began reading about the origins of slavery in Hebrew society and discrimination against Canaanites. Slaves of ancient Rome were often called “Rufus” as the stereotype (see Land of Canaan reading pp. 22-23). So Spartacus was not alone. Stereotypes existed against all slaves in Roman society. Same way people today might say “Becky” to mean a while demographic of white women in our society today. So we return to Spartacus, a revolutionary “Rufus”, or slave, who along with thousands of soldiers and peasants built an army to demand heaven on earth for the enslaved, oppressed people of the Roman empire.
Watch the movie here and read Chapter 7 in the book. It was assigned last week so you should already have some sense of the Roman empire and the chapter. Pages 271 to 282 are the main pages to focus on. According to this movie, we can see that Spartacus had a strong sense of equality and freedom for the people against the corrupt and oppressive Roman elites. Why do you think Spartacus is not as well known as Jesus? Use examples from the video of who Spartacus was and what he accomplished in the rebellion to tell us how Spartacus was similar to and different from Jesus.
