For this essay you will write a full 3-page literary response to several of the stories we covered in the
module. In this response you will write about your opinion on the various themes, topics, situations or
problems encountered by Mexican-Americans in the readings, articles or videos. You will need to select
at least 3 items (stories, articles, or videos) and express your opinion as much as you can on the themes,
problems, or situations encountered by these individuals.
Remember, it is your opinion, but make sure you back up what you say with quotes from the stories,
videos, or articles. Make sure that your quotes do not exceed more than 10% of your entire essay. You
may also paraphrase.
You may select your own themes or topics to write about. However, here are some topics you may
write about:
The dangers encountered by illegal immigrants
The life and sacrifices of illegal immigrants
Mexican Americans remembering and longing for their country of origin.
Day to day situations
Family problems
Economic problems
Drug violence
Human trafficking
Make sure to:
Use MLA format (Your name, class, professor’s name, and date on the top left corner)
Your last name and page number on the upper right-hand corner
Place an original title in the middle
Write it in a Word document
Double spaced
Size 12
Times New Roman
Offer in-text citations
Include a Works Cited page
Submit the essay in the drop box by 11:59 PM on Sunday, March 6.
Essay Format
Introduction (you do not have to cover all of these topics in the intro. These are just ideas)
Provide some background information on illegal immigrants.
Outline the problems that they encounter.
Write about their dreams and aspirations.
Why are they coming to the United States?
After you have given some background information, you will need to write your thesis sentence. Here’s
an example:
Thesis sample: Many Mexican-Americans encounter numerous hazards and new situations
before and after entering the United States.
NOTE: The above introductory paragraph should be between 5-7 sentences.
Body Paragraphs (Section 1)
First Body Paragraph
Topic Sentence (Choose one story, or video, or article and one or two themes): In the story “Excerpt
from Crossing Over: A Mexican Family on the Migrant Trail”, the dangers and hardships encountered by
illegal immigrants are illustrated.
Concrete Detail: Provide an example from the story. You may quote or paraphrase. Provide an example
that mentions one of the dangers encountered by illegal immigrants.
Commentary: Provide YOUR OWN commentary on the example you just provided. What does this
example show?
Commentary: Provide further commentary on your first example. What does this example illustrate?
Concrete Detail: Provide another example of another danger faced by immigrants from the story. You
may provide a quote or paraphrase.
Commentary: Provide YOUR OWN commentary on the second example you just provided. What does
this example show?
Commentary: Provide further commentary on your second example. What does this example
illustrate?
Concluding Statement: Provide a closing reflection on everything you have mentioned in this
paragraph.
NOTE: Everything highlighted in yellow above constitutes one paragraph.
Second Body Paragraph
Topic Sentence (You may continue with the same theme or choose a second theme from the same story
or a different story. You may also choose an article or a video and discuss a different problem or
theme): In addition, another theme illustrated in this story is the loss of innocence.
Concrete Detail: Provide an example from the story. You may quote or paraphrase. Provide an example
that mentions how young immigrants lose their innocence once they get to the border.
Commentary: Provide YOUR OWN commentary on the example you just provided. What does this
example show?
Commentary: Provide further commentary on your first example. What does this example illustrate?
Concrete Detail: Provide another example on how young illegal immigrants lose their innocence while
crossing to the United States. You may provide a quote or paraphrase.
Commentary: Provide YOUR OWN commentary on the second example you just provided. What does
this example show?
Commentary: Provide further commentary on your second example. What does this example
illustrate?
Concluding Statement: Provide a closing reflection on everything you have mentioned in this
paragraph.
NOTE: Everything highlighted in green above constitutes one paragraph
Repeat the same format for the remaining paragraphs. Remember, you may choose a story, a video or
an article and write about the problems and situations encountered by these individuals. The key here
is EVIDENCE. If you are claiming something, then make sure you provide evidence, and after you’ve
provided proof/evidence, then you need to elaborate further by providing your own opinion.
Concluding Paragraph
Offer a final reflection on your conclusion. You may want to restate the thesis. Provide closure to your
essay. 5-7 sentences for the conclusion will be fine.
Make sure to provide a Works Cited page, and make sure to provide in-text citations.
Remember, this paper should include the following:
