Assignment 1: The Instruction Manual
Write the instructions for your class product. Include the logo you’ve started designing for the product in Discussion 3 on the first page of the manual, as well.
These instructions should guide users through the process of using and /or caring for the product both safely and efficiently.
This assignment consists of TWO main parts: The actual product logo and instructions themselves and then an overview of the process you used to write them.
Part 1: Product Instructions
Write instructions for the safe assembly (if necessary), use, and / or care of your product for its end users. Consider the end user’s familiarity with similar products before writing the instructions. Conduct your own research to determine safety concerns and protocols for safe product operation.
The final draft of the instructions should be around 3-4 double spaced pages long, and should include a combination of text and graphics. Be sure to include the working draft of your product’s logo on the first page of these instructions. How many graphics you use it up to you, but every graphic must have a function and must be useful for the reader. Consider whether a graphic or a written descriiption –or perhaps a combination of the two– would be most useful.
Instructional content may vary by product, but will likely include the following sections:
A table of contents
A brief introduction that builds good will with readers and highlights the product’s USP
Tools needed for assembly
Safety warnings
Step-by-step procedures for use
An FAQs or troubleshooting section
Methods of contacting your company for assistance
Part 2: Your Instruction-Writing Process
At the end of the instruction manual take a moment respond to the four following questions. The answers to these questions should be relatively short, and not more than 1 double-spaced page long.
1. Who is your target audience? Provide as many demographics as possible, including but not limited to audience members’ expected age, occupation, interest level, socioeconomic status, and so on.
2. What guided your font size and type decisions in this document? What informed your design decisions regarding headings, white space, line space, color and so on? List the main principles of page design you used in these instructions and explain how they helped you in your work.
3. What problems, if any, did you encounter while writing the instructions? How did you solve them?
4. What planning steps did you complete before writing the instructions?
