Research Project – Diversity Assignment (Module 8)
For the Diversity Research Assignment, each of you will create a three page paper (In Microsoft Word Only) on the topic below, follow the criteria listed. Be sure to proofread your writing and include all the criteria below. You will have only two (2) weeks to complete your final assignment, and it will be graded according to the rubric provided. Please post your written assignment to the “Final Assignment” Discussion Board. Please post any questions you may have in the “Water Cooler – Got a Question, Ask Here!” discussion board area.
Diversity Research Assignment Criteria
•Written report – minimum 3 pages (Min. 750 words) (Not including reference page), double spaced, 12 font size in Roman Times (In Microsoft “Word” Document ONLY. If I cannot open it, it will not be graded, and you will receive a zero as your grade.)
•References –a minimum of 3 references, excluding your textbook. (APA format required).
•ALL sections must be in APA Format. Click here for more details: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ (Half of the total points possible in each section will be deducted if APA format is not followed.)
Instructions:
The student will work with someone outside of class. You may work with another student, friend, family member, etc. First, select a scenario below in which you will put yourself in the shoes of someone with a disability. You are required to attend a public event or perform an activity of daily living. Event or activity may include: using public transportation, going to the mall, grocery shopping, and recreational activities.
Disabilities to choose from and to be performed with your partner:
Hearing impairment – Have an interpreter to speak for you
Vision impairment – Cover both eyes, and someone guides you around
Wheelchair experience – Using a wheelchair to get from one place to another
Use of crutches – Student must use crutches during activities
In your essay, you must define and describe the following areas:
What were your impressions during the experience?
Were you treated differently because of your disability? Please explain. How did you feel you should have been treated?
What were your assumptions before the experience, and what were your assumptions after the experience?
How did people who interacted with you view the disability?
What particular emotions were coming up for you while interacting with others?
Did you find any complications in the environment due to your disability?
Were there any obstructions that made it difficult for you to get to your destination?
How difficult was it to rely on your partner to help you?
How did the interactions you encountered throughout the experience change your perspective on how the world treats people with disabilities?
How will this change the way you interact with others that have disabilities in the future?
Please find 3 peer-reviewed articles that cover two of the three aspects areas below and incorporate the sources in your paper:
Describe the physical/social characteristics of the disability you have chosen.
Locate evidence from the perspective of someone with a disability on being stereotyped or being judged based on their limitations.
Illustrate how people with a disability would like to be viewed by society.
