CO5: Apply theories and principles of American foreign policy in the analysis of current events. Please review your discussions, notes, and plans from the Week Seven simulation forum. The first two questions should include facts that you presented in the Week Seven discussion. The only extra requirement is that you have to substantiate your work (with in-text citations and a Reference list.) The last question calls for details from the Rosati article that focuses on stress and personality in the foreign policy decision-making process. Link it with the experience you had as a policy-maker in the Week Seven simulation. It can be stressful to make foreign policies that could affect not only the US but also the entire world, right? Finish your last answer with examples of how a personality affects policymaking. Rosati mentions a few presidents. In this weeks lesson we learned about the JCPOA. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) took place in 2015 and is known as the Iran nuclear deal. The significance of the JCPOA is that Iran agreed to eliminate its stockpile of medium-enriched uranium and cut its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by 98%. In doing so, the JCPOA ended some sanctions on Iran and suspended others. In 2018, then President Donald Trump, withdrew the United States from the JCPOA under the pretext that he did not feel that Iran was upholding it’s end of the deal. During the 2020 elections, one of President Bidens main running points during his campaign was the fact that he would re-join the JCPOA as long as Iran remained in compliance with the terms of the deal. The re-joining of the JCPOA will be a feat for any President. Not only do they have to rebuild the bridges burnt with Iran, they also have to get the backing of the US government, both of which will be hard. The main objective is to restore the previous relationships had with Iran and re-integrate ourselves into the JCPOA so that Iran’s nuclear from can be monitored. The point is to ensure that Irans nuclear use is exclusive to peaceful uses. I believe that the first step into new negotiations with Iran would be to lift previously sited sanctions or to restructure the way the sanctions are upheld. Without that, I don’t think Iran will entertain us at all. Implementing your plan 1. Given your plan set out in the Week Seven simulation (Iran’s nuclear ambitions was the topic), what tactics are most appropriate for achieving these various goals? Why? 2. Given the current political climate, what are some of the obstacles to achieving the goals of the plan? Politics? Economics? 3. From your experience in the simulation, and the Rosati article, how can stress and personality impact policy-making? Give a few examples of presidents from the Rosati article (The Power of Human Cognition). References: The Power of Human Cognition in the Study of World Politics Author: Jerel A.
