examine the anthropological concept of reciprocity.
Pay attention to acts of reciprocity and/or altruism that may be going on around you this week. What patterns do you see in the when, for whom, and how?
Write a “thick description” of at least 2 observations that you make (500 words or so, and include a pic/video if you want.) Remember, a thick description is a detailed description of the setting, participants, activities, interactions, and social dramas (what kinds of drama, conflict, tension, etc is happening?) playing out that allow the reader to feel as if they are really there. Keep track of everything you see and do, and what you see others saying and doing.
Do a short analysis…what do you think is going on in these situations? Are there occasions when something that looks like generalized reciprocity (where one gives to another without an expectation that the gift will be returned) is actually an attempt to elicit, obligate, or position someone into a balanced relationship (i.e. I’ll cook dinner, in hopes that you might lend me $20). Or is something else occurring through the exchanges or acts of altruism?
