WESTERN EUROPEAN POLITICS MIDTERM
Answers for each essay should be at minimum 800 words though you may write more if
you wish. I do not want to see any numbering or bullet points and nor do I want to see my
lecture notes copied and pasted. Answers should be in your own words and in a conversational
essay style format. You don’t have to cite the textbook or my notes but reference the assigned
videos by name or topic. You may refer to and properly cite outside sources (current events or
scholarly works) at a minimum but the bulk of your essays should be derived from the materials
provided in the course.
As an upper level course and given that you will have access to your notes and other materials, I
will be grading this on a difficult scale. For all of the essays I am looking for answers that clearly
articulate what you have learned with relevant examples. In addition, answers should contain
analysis. This includes compare/contrast, assessing strengths and weaknesses, and your opinion
(if applicable) of key concepts. In turn, be very concise in your response and balance descriiption
with analysis.
Answer two of the three essay questions below according to the instructions above. Be sure to
identify which questions you selected.
1. What is the impact of electoral systems upon government formation and voter behavior in
the UK, Ireland, France, and Germany? Describe the governmental and political party
systems in all four countries and assess the impact of recent/impending national elections.
2. What domestic policy challenges confront the UK, Ireland, France, and Germany? How
do key domestic actors influence policy outcomes? Assess the impact of UK devolution
at the regional/local levels and German federalism in regards to key institutions.
Essay Response Notes:
Q1: Government formation refers to PM/Cabinet in parliamentary and both components of the
executive in a semi-presidential system. Address only UK national elections and not regional
elections in this essay response. Voter behavior refers to how electoral systems influence voter
choice in the allocation of elected offices. When covering governmental systems include upper
chambers and reference executive removal. For electoral systems, focus on those associated with
selection of the lower chamber. Party systems may be described according to major/minor,
number, and ideologies. Recent elections are within the last five years while impending are those
scheduled later this year or in the next two years.
Q2: Domestic policies refer to health, social welfare, economic, cultural, and security. Focus on
Post-2008 measures but you may refer to earlier examples. Labor reforms are also included in
with social welfare. Cultural issues include religious minorities, relations between church and
state, and immigration. Ireland section of this essay (apart from cultural) will be smaller, but do
not ignore. Key domestic actors include unions, interest groups, and social movements. A brief
note on the French unitary state is fine. When assessing UK devolution, be sure to explain how
each of the three regional governments are selected and operate. Don’t forget to briefly mention
local government devolution in England and the impact of all of this on the unitary UK state.
Key German institutions include the Bundesrat and the Constitutional Court.
When answering an essay, keep spelling and grammatical errors to a
minimum and complete the following tasks:
Define the terms within the essay and any terms you introduce in
your responses.
Provide examples of all relevant material (key persons/institutions,
policies, statistical trends, etc.) that demonstrate knowledge of the
content associated with each essay.
Analyze the material associated with each essay. Analysis includes:
(1) compare/contrast any key terms, (2) strengths/weaknesses of
arguments, decisions, policies, etc., and/or (3) a well-developed
opinion.
Review the key terms below and plug them in as applicable into
each essay response.
Incorporate the learning objectives from the weekly module
overviews as applicable.
Read the assigned chapters, review the lectures, and refer to the
videos or discussion boards when applicable. When reviewing the
texts and lectures, refer to material in identified tables and figures
and those of your choice. You do not have to identify specific items
(Table 1.1), but rather simply summarize what you learned from
them.
After writing a rough or final draft of your essay responses, ask yourself the
following questions.
1. Are both my essay responses about 800 words or more?
2. Have I included as many of the Key Terms found at the bottom of each
applicable module overview into my essay?
3. Does my response adequately reflect the material in the texts and
lectures (and videos)?
4. Are my sentences clear, do I need to elaborate upon anything?
