Learning Goal: I’m working on a history project and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.THE HUMAN TRADITION IN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER 9 KEY POINTS/QUESTIONS:INTRODUCTION: What is the Chapter you are discussing? How does it fit into California History?
CONTEXT/BACKGROUND: What is the Historical Context of the assigned chapter reading? Give historical background of the reading’s topic. (Hint: the historian may give you some insight at the beginning of the reading. Use that but also do your own research. Use your Pacific Eldorado book if it addresses the topic). Assume that your professor may not be aware of this historical event, figure or issue so your job is to inform her.
SOURCE OF CHAPTER: Who wrote the document? Provide some background on the historian. You will have to Google them. Why do you think the scholar wrote about this article?
ARGUMENT: What is the main argument of the reading? How does the scholar try to prove it (i.e. what kind of evidence is used)? Give examples.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: What do you think is the most significant/most important about the chapter you read? Why? Provide evidence/details to support this.
QUOTE ANALYSIS: Share at least ONE complete sentence/passage/quote (reference the page #s) you found most interesting from the chapter? What is meaningful about this sentence/passage/quote? How can it teach us about history? (For example, why did you choose this sentence? What did it make you reflect on? How can this quote be connected to history, culture, society, etc.?)
THEMES: What are TWO themes that you found from reading the chapter and why? (For example, themes can be like Culture, Gender, Race, Politics, Power, Hierarchy, Inequality, Economics, Complexity, Conflict, Class, Environment, Change, Freedom, etc. Why did you choose these two themes? Do see you these themes repeated elsewhere in history? Where and why? What do these themes make you think about?)
OUTSIDE PRIMARY SOURCE: Find a Primary Source that relates to your topic. The Primary Source does not have to be specifically about the subject of your reading but it could relate to the document. For example, the chapter on Spanish Priest Mariano Payeras discusses the Mission System. You can find a primary source about the Mission System if you cannot find a Primary Source about Mariano Payeras. Once you settle on a Primary Source, provide a summary of it in your assignment and explain the significance of the Primary Source. This is an important part of the grade. Please consult with me if you are having trouble finding a primary source. (Remember, a primary source is different from a secondary source. A primary source is an original or firsthand account of a topic. It can be a photograph, video clip, artwork, a letter, memoir, a government record, a newspaper article from that time, etc).
UNANSWERED QUESTION: What is ONE open-ended discussion question you after reading the chapter? Why did you think about this question? Explain. (One question of an example: How did the Reconstruction Era limit the rights of freedmen (former slaves)? Why did you pick this question? What made you think about this question? What do you think the answer might be?
REFLECTION: Provide a conclusion/reflection to your assignment. What did you learn from the reading? What did it make you reflect on? Why is this reading important for understanding California history?
