EDITING CHANGES FROM MY PROFESSOR:
What is the news here?
We all know already that we have to wear masks and get vaccinated at school. What is new?
I don’t see any news.
You need to find out if or when Marymount University will lift the vaccine requirement or mask rule. Do more reporting. Ask the administration. Contact the university spokesman or go back to Dr. Finkelstein. Ask: What are the circumstances under which the university would lift the vaccine requirement or mask rule?
Then, when you get the answer, write it down. The lead of the story should tell me if or when Marymount University will lift the vaccine requirement or mask rule.
* You cannot rely on other journalistic sources for your story. The Washington Post cannot be a reference on the story. You must REPORT not Repeat!
* Words like “unfortunately” connote opinion. Avoid using -ly words. We are not writing OPINION. We are writing News stories. Just the facts.
Your story makes many assertions without providing attribution. In other words, you are making statements without saying who said them. For example, “vaccination serves as an additional layer of defense against COVID-19,” SAID WHOM? Unless you have somehow acquired a medical degree or other certification, you need to provide ATTRIBUTION.
We also don’t want to hear about your interview journey. We want to hear the facts of the story. So comments like “It was interesting to hear the different opinions of students” are NOT part of the story.

Marymount University will lift the vaccine requirement or mask rule (IF XYZ), according to (university source.)
Dr. Laura Finkelstein, associate vice president of Marymount Student Health, said XYZ…
Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin suspended a mask mandate for public universities in
Virginia (WHEN). Marymount is a private university.
Sasha Khan, a Marymount junior Biology major, said, “People should be in control of their bodies, the governor, the government, university officials should not be at the forefront of forcing mandates related to their bodies.”
Khan said, “vaccination and
masking should be voluntary, and the government and other involved institutions should
publicize and let citizens and students decide what they want to do next.”
Keily Molina, (add IDENTIFICATION? Year, major?), said, “My learning style thrives in in-person classes. I struggled to perform well online during the early days of the pandemic. Returning to campus brought me great excitement, and if this requires showing proof of a vaccine or wearing masks on
campus, I do not believe this is a big issue. I am here to get an education under any
circumstances, and I will not let this get in the way.”
Dr. Melissa Harris, a Communications professor said, “I do not mind the vaccination requirements up until this point if that means my students and colleagues are taking the right precautionary measures to remain healthy. What I am exhausted over are the masks! I wish to communicate with my students by seeing their faces and expressions while I teach and that they are able to see mine.”
Harris said she hopes to be able to teach without a mask in the 2022 fall
semester so she can connect with her students.
