The paper must take the following format, in sequential order:
1. A statement of the problem (i.e., state your research question or questions.) What is it that you intend to investigate or explore in your paper?
2. The significance of the problem. Why is it important that we study this issue? What questions can we answer by doing so? You may apply a theory or theories to explain why your research problem is significant.
3. A brief literature review that summarizes and critiques past research on your topic.
4. A description of how you collected your data (i.e., what research methods did you use to collect your data/information), including any methodological limitations of your study. What sociological concepts and theories will you use in your analyses?
5. A detailed analysis of your collected data. What did your analyses reveal? Provide examples from the data to show and support your findings.
6. A brief summary of your research findings. What can you conclude from your research study?
7. A discussion of the sociological significance and implications of your findings. For example, what social, political, and/or economic significance and implications do your findings have for African Americans and/or other African-descended peoples or for society more generally (e.g., such as long-term race relations, social policies, socioeconomic status, group identity, Pan-African relations, black studies as a discipline, etc.)?
Abstract
Femininity has always been an elusive concept for many to define—especially for Black women. What does being feminine look like? What type of body, personality, or attitude is described as being feminine? Who can be feminine? These questions have been in conversation for the past couple of years and have taken a new life on social media, as popular images of Black women have been shaped by mainstream Hip-Hop culture and film depictions that have characterized Black femininity negatively. As a result, many Black women have taken to online avenues such as video-sharing platforms—YouTube and TikTok—as well as other content-sharing sites—Instagram and Twitter—to uplift and converse with one another about their connections to their womanhood and, by large, their humanity. This has caused an uptick in “femininity coaching” or advice for Black women to “tap into their full feminine potential” as a solution to resist mainstream negative imagery of Black femininity. This paper will analyze the current iteration of Black femininity content on social media, specifically on the platforms of YouTube and TikTok. I will explore how these spaces interact with the consistent negative imagery of Black women in popular culture and will examine how their ideologies shape their perspectives on hetero-normative relationships, beauty, and Black women’s history of oppression in America, by analyzing several case studies of popular Black women femininity content creators on social media and the ‌audiences they attract, and what shapes their ideologies on femininity.
