Student Reflections
There are two-parts to reflections:
1. Critical Examination of Social Injustice: while reading, identify the following,
1. What is/are the social injustice(s) explored?
2. What are the social beliefs, public policies/law, informal regulations that are responsible for or
enforce the social injustice?
3. What are the social structures or social institutions that:
a. are responsible for or enforce the social injustice?
b. Exacerbate the social injustice (make it worse or deny relief/help)
4. What are the ways in which this social injustice is:
a. Normalized?
b. Accepted?
c. Justified?
2. Reflection: Once you have done the readings, take some time to process them with a focus on the
points you identified above. Think and respond to the following, while also, noting the things you
identified in the points above:
• Is there anything new you learned, or a new way of thinking about a topic you already were
aware of?
o What is your overall impression of what you read?
o How are you making sense of what you read?
o How has what you read impact your existing thoughts?
• Was your examination the social injustice different or the same as you anticipated? Explain.
o How did you use and make sense of your SJ lens?
o How does what you have read support or contradict your experiences or previous
knowledge?
• Were the points you noted from #’s 2 and 3 what you anticipated?
o Was there something that really stood out to you? (an aha moment?)
• Was there anything that was discouraging or upsetting to you?
o Take a moment to think about things from the perspective of those impacted by the issue
(if it is not you), how are you processing that?
Writing reflections: reflections are deeply personal, you do not need to respond to each point above, focus
on what stood out while completing the first step. You are reflecting on the material as it relates to the
questions posted under critical examination.
Class Discussion: in addition to writing a reflection on the reading material, students are expected to
come to class prepared to lead a discussion on the issue. In addition to writing a reflection, students must
compose 1-2 discussion prompts for the class which should also be included on the reflection.
Grading: Each reflection must be 2-full pages and must include two discussion questions.
