The POP Guide 1
2. The POP guide must be ‘around 30-40 pages’ (not including references), typewritten in MS Word and double spaced. The model for the paper will be the POP Guide number 64, Abandoned Buildings and Lots (Attached file). Please format your POP guide exactly like this guide. If you have any questions about content or format, please refer to other guides and/or ask me to clarify.
3. You should expect to include 40-60 sources as part of your literature review.
4. Use endnotes instead of footnotes for your in-text APA citations; this writing uses a
different format than APA style for in-text citations (see POP Guides for examples). You
can format your references page in APA style.
5. There are several guides that summarize knowledge about how police can reduce the
harm caused by specific crime and disorder problem. They are written to standard
format, this is the format students must follow.
6. Students must identify an original crime or disorder problem (one that has not already
been published) that harms their ‘local’ community and write a guide about how to respond to this problem. Your “local community” is usually the neighborhood / town / county / city where you live/work. Identifying the problem can also come from local/national media (TV, newspapers, Local websites, etc.), minutes from a town council meeting or from the police department; the police are obviously a very good source of local crime problems. You can always consult with me for advice on your guide; email is the best method.
7. You must undertake a comprehensive literature search and start this process early in the semester. Your lit review should be based primarily on library materials (‘ask a librarian’ is a great tool on the JJ Library website). You can also use Google Scholar and other Internet search tools to identify factors contributing to the problem and effective ways of responding to the problem. Ask yourself:
A POP guide for police and analysts summarizes knowledge about how criminal justice
agencies can reduce the harm caused by a specific crime or disorder problem.
