A good manager is able to make order out of chaos and direct subordinates to accomplish various tasks. Not everyone can do that effectively. However, I think the next step in the evolution of a good manager is to become a true leader. Often times a good manager is a great candidate to receive extra attention to train them how to be a good leader. When people are managed effectively the mission will most likely succeed because of supervision or oversight. Going a step further, when people are led effectively the mission will most likely succeed because the people have a better understanding of the “why” behind what they are doing and will strive to find a way to achieve their goals, not just achieve their tasks.I feel very fortunate because growing up in my service I’ve had many outstanding leaders who were motivating and inspirational. I can remember checking in to my first duty station. When I arrived my First Sergeant pulled me into the office and spoke to me for almost an hour. He asked where I was from, what my goals in life were, he told me where he was from and the reasons he joined the Marine Corps. It was a real give and take conversation not just an interview to take down facts about me for a spreadsheet. Towards the end of our meeting as we were walking to the door for me to leave, he asked if I was complete on my professional military education. When I responded that I was not he stopped, brought me back in and right there on the spot enrolled me in the education program. He said that we needed Marines who were thinkers as well as fighters. I didn’t know it then, but as I am learning the attributes of transformational leaders I now see that he displayed each of the 5I’s of transformational leadership. I walked away from that knowing that he was a leader I could trust. He gave me a sense of pride in my unit and its history. He set high expectations and I wanted to meet them or surpass them. He made me believe that I should develop my brain and not just resort to physical violence. He took the time to invest in me as a person, brand new to the unit. I have carried that model of leadership with me ever since. I often think about how that leader would handle situations especially when I am having difficulty finding my way through. That is just one of the many leaders that have given me great examples of how to effectively lead as opposed to simply manage others.Post 2: Leading vs Managing – BlakeLike most of you reading this, I have had many managers and a few good leaders. Managers will check the boxes and do enough to keep themselves off of the bad boy/girl lists from the higher-ups. A lot of what a manager does is self-serving. On the other hand, leaders will take time to develop you; they will show you the ropes and take interest in your career. They have been through the ropes and are able to empathize with your experiences. Many years ago, I had a supervisor who I would definitely not classify as a leader. He exhibited not one of the 5 I’s. After a few years of this living nightmare, I was finally able to change supervisors. The experience was night and day. My new supervisor was compassionate, empathetic, and trustworthy. She was my cheerleader when I felt low and brought me down to Earth when I got too cocky. Most importantly, she listened and provided feedback after years of having no voice. I’m gushing here, but she really made a difference. Unfortunately for her, my old supervisor became her supervisor and he eventually drove her to retirement. What is truly upsetting is how the bad apples can stick around for so long. What does that say about the system that we work within? What I enjoy about this course is the motivation that is being instilled in me. I want my troops to experience what having a good leader is like and for them to carry that forward.
