Watch brief presentation related to the Milgram study discussed in your text, Thinking Critically about Social Life; “If Hitler Asked You to Execute a Stranger, Would You?, The Milgram Experiment”, on page 172.
After watching the clip and reading the textbook’s discussion of the experiment, answer these questions:
What factors do you think were most important in causing the high rate of compliance?
Would you have been susceptible to the pressure to continue participating in the experiment? Why or why not?
What if the order to do something unethical or even illegal came from an employer, or a coach? Do you think there would be similar kinds of pressure to comply? What would you do?
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were asked to compromise your internal values? What did you do?
Now, I am not expecting this to be a particularly lengthy or busy discussion; I want us to consider how we reconcile our internalized values against the demands placed on us in real life. Sometimes, it is easier to “go along to get along”, or sometimes it is in our self-interest to allow those values to get set aside. While we would all like to think we would only act with the purest of motives and always completely consistent with our stated values and moral principles, the reality is sometimes different.
