Note: Under “normal” circumstances this assignment requires that you make a visit to the library and take a look at several children books. We will have to do this part virtually.
You can find children’s books on YouTube by searching authors, you can also go to openlibrary.org. You can also use other digital resources.

There are 4 parts to this assignment:
Select author: Find a picture book author, who has written at least 3 books. Take some time browsing and choosing your favorite. Explain why you chose this author! Things to look at and comment: characters, place, illustrator style, wording and style, storyline, message, themes, lessons.
About the author’s books:
What type of books does this author write? (fiction, non-fiction, etc)
Who are the characters? Are the main characters the same or different in the books that you found/read?
Is the setting similar in all or some of the books? If so, why do you think the author chose this particular setting?
Are there particular messages that the author wants to voice?
Are the characters similar?
What do the author’s books tell you about the author’s culture?
What do you think about the illustrations? What do you think about the wording the author uses?
About the author: Look up information about the author or see if there is a biography (or auto-biography) for this author.
Try to see if you can answer this: What in the author’s life might have influenced his or her writing? What was happening historically in the author’s home country at the time of his/her major works? (2-3 paragraphs).
Learning Experiences related to the books selected
I want you to design 5 learning activities that are directly related to the themes of the books. Ideally, each activity will be related to one of the authors books, but you can also use the same book for more than one activity. The learning activities must be an extension of the book.
At the same time in each learning experience you must include 2 strategies from the book “50 EC literacy strategies (by Beaty)”. Throughput the book, Beaty gives hundreds of ideas of how to use children books to anchor literacy activities. You have been reading about them, and now I want you to do the same!!!
For each activity / book, include:
Name of the Book
Short summary of the book: 2-3 sentences to give me an idea
Activity Description: Describe in a paragraph or more an activity that you wish to do as an extension of the book and in order to promote literacy skills in young children
Describe 2 strategies used (from Beaty)
Why are these strategies effective / important? What research supports the use of this strategy (you have done this before in the discussions)
What are Pre-K / Kindergarten common core standards aligned to the activity? At least 2 per activity (you have done this before in the discussions).
Examples:
I am giving you a very simple and short example to give you an idea (in case you are a bit confused) This is a very short example to give you an idea of how to link children’s books to activities using 2 strategies. Please elaborate more! I am just including the activities and strategies, but you need to also explain why the strategy is important / effective and include the common core standards. I hope this is helpful!!
Example 1:
Author: Leo Leoni
Book Title: “Little Blue and Little Yellow”
Short summary of the book: Little blue and little yellow go to the park to play. Their tears end up mixing creating little green
Activity related to book: Have children finger paint with blue and yellow. See what happens when the colors mix. Have children describe what happened. What new colors were created? How come? and dictate their experiences to you in words. Write their words on paper and allow children to write their name.
Strategies: Strategy 24: Finger painting, Strategy 21: taking dictation
Example 2:
Author: Leo Leoni
Book Title: “Fish is Fish”
Short summary of the book: A fish tries to get out of the water to explore the world. He must get back because he can’t breathe. Now he needs to use imagination and the stories his toad friends tell him to imagine what the world looks like
Activity related to book: Ask children about a place where they always wanted to go. Have children paint in the in the easel the places they would like to visit.
Create a pretend destination in the drama center. Ask chidlrne what they imagine the place to be like. For example, your drama center can turn into Italy, China or the Moon! Have children recreate travelling to places they always wanted to go.
Strategies: Strategy 23: Easel Painting 23; Strategy 6: Dramatic play
Extra credit: please discuss if the books address issues of diversity in the early childhood classrooms. Are the characters diverse in terms of ethnicity, language, culture, family, and communities? How? Why do you think this is the case?
IMPORTANT!!!!
Use your own words at ALL TIMES. It is not acceptable to cut and paste sentences from the internet or other sources. You must paraphrase and summarize. I can tell when you do that.
