This assignment asks you to do a written version of what we do in class: break down and analyze a work.
First, go to Artstor and choose a painting from the 20th Century that appeals to you. Yes, it must be from Artstor and it must be from the 20th Century (like I just said). The 20th Century is from 1900-2000. Look into the background of the piece and its creator using at least one source that is not your textbook. Be sure to include the source at the end of your paper–either an MLA or APA citation style is fine. Do not use the source to write a “report” on the painting. In fact, try to resist quoting from the source at all. Don’t give me a bunch of facts. I want you to learn about the work from the source, then use what you have learned to formulate your own response.

Second, give a detailed descriiption of the artifact (about 150 to 200 words) through your own eyes. Remember that a work of art is partially determined by content (what it seems to depict), but also by how that content is rendered (this could be elements like the piece’s brushstrokes, or the framing of the scene). Imagine you are describing it to someone who’d never seen it—give lots of specific detail regarding color, size, material, and the image itself.
You’d never describe the painting of the Mona Lisa as just “a lady in front of a window,” right?
Third, think about what drew you to it. What bigger unresolved cultural issue does the work raise about being human? You may address one of the following issues: gender, power, race, socioeconomic status, ability, age, sexuality, language, … or you can introduce one of your own. Then relate the artifact to an element of your life today using that issue. Be creative in your idea—the expression of your position in this segment is what I’m looking for, not whether I agree with it or not.
Following the above structure, your paper should be 500 words. You must include all three sections in your response.
