Overview
Through this assignment, you will discuss how MSU Denver applied the planning steps and had to take a “Strategic Pause” in March 2020 to do “post-pandemic scenario planning.” Thus, they engaged in contingency/crisis planning. The videos provide details on contingency planning and MSU Denver’s responses.
Please read the paragraph above the “Collaborative Strategic Planning Process” in the MSU Denver Plan  Download the MSU Denver Plan(p. 3) Explain detailed answers to the following questions after reading chapters 9 and 17 and accessing the attached videos.
Background: More than a year ago (January 2020), Larry Sampler (VP of Administration and COO of MSU Denver) and his team started looking into the possibility of a possible pandemic. Hoping it would not affect us but recognizing the need to prepare just in case. As noted in the most recent Town Hall video, Dr. Davidson explained how they had a collaborative planning meeting with people from across campus (in CAVEA) right before COVID-19 hit Colorado.
Instructions
1. First, let’s start with the Strategic Planning Process started in its regular 5-year cycle. Identify which of the first three steps in the Planning Process (LO 17.2) are illustrated in the strategic planning process timeline found in the attached MSU Denver 2030 Strategic Plan. (p. 3) Hint: mention the Step number in the planning process and Phase # (or #s) of the MSU Denver strategic plan.
2. We now focus on the scenario and contingency planning that MSU Denver had switch to March 2020 (when we closed). In the Crisis Management Principles video, six steps are identified (noted below). Briefly explain how or if MSU Denver implemented each of these steps.
3. Now, let’s apply to MSU Denver the basic parts of a contingency plan (outlined in the Basic Disaster Management Contingency Plan). List steps from transcripts.
4. What are two SMART goals that were considered? Evaluate each goal against SMART criteria.  Are these good goals?  (If you don’t remember what SMART stands for, do look it up again. We’re looking for the goals to be listed and analyzed based on this criteria.  Do not list a goal for each letter of SMART.)
5. Refer to Strategic Planning Process and the attached MSU Denver videos and materials …Explain 2-3 reasons how the MSU Denver’s planning processes were collaborative and 2-3 reasons why input from different constituents was important to the success of the Strategic Plan and Contingency/Crisis Plan..
6. LO 9…MSU Denver’s mission & vision continued to guide us through pandemic and contingency/crisis planning. Explain which grand strategy is indicated by MSU Denver 2030 Strategic Plan. How does the lockdown potentially affect that grand strategy?
7. Refer to the following statement on page 12 of MSU Denver’s 2030 strategic plan: Progress on each pillar and goal will need to be evaluated and measured regularly to mark successes along the way and course-correct, as needed. Explain 2-3 ways MSU Denver could monitor progress toward accomplishing the Pillars and goals.
