1 Synopsis of a journal article (20%): from the Supplemental readings listed on the syllabus: due before first class in December
Each student will summarize one article that you will select from our course Reading List of supplemental articles (only from week #3 onward). The Synopsis (500-750 # of words, up to 2 pages). There is a folder to claim your choice: your full name – Authors’ Name, Year, Title of article; first come, first served.
Here are the 6-point guidelines to follow for your written presentation:
1. What is (are) the authors’ main or key point(s) that is (are) connected to the assigned textbook readings for this topic? In specific, how do they directly connect to, explicate or elaborate on the economics in the course material—the models, theories, etc.?
2. What appears to be the central question or hypothesis that guides or concerns this particular study? How well is this executed?
3. a) One way in which you were positively impressed (or surprised to learn) with the way the author(s) addressed the issue?
3. b) One way in which you disappointed (i.e., a critique, e.g., something omitted, misleading, covered inadequately, or not soundly connected to theory)?
4. What seems to be something innovative or unique about the article—the methodological approach, the findings, the data that are used or tested?
5. Find ONE recently published, closely related, additional academic journal, as an “article of contrast” (which could be an article you used for your “reflection,” if it is relevant) — fully cite and briefly summarize in one paragraph (an “annotation”) that in some fashion contrasts with this article (different model, sample used (e.g., country, types of workers), etc.). Strive for the greatest, comprehensible level of technicality in this assignment that demonstrates how much you learned.
6. A brief “Reflection” — one new thing each of you learned from this article that might be of practical use to you to predict behavior of:
a) a current or future employer.
b) yourself as a future job seeker or employee
