Watch an episode of news from this past week (Mon 2/14 – Friday 2/18) from one of the three traditional network news shows: ABC, CBS, or NBC. These networks are free to access live on TV or online afterward (with ads, of course). These network shows should give students more than enough episode options. Please DO NOT address cable news shows or any editorial news show.
As you watch, analyze the show’s presentation, content, and focus via the lens of audience demographics. I can save you the research — for the nightly network news, audiences are typically working-to-middle class, with ~20% of the audience in the most prized, higher-earning 25-54 age demograophic that advertisers crave, and ~80% being over 50.
What appeals to this consumer audience do you see within the episodes? Please provide 2-3 examples.
You could consider the structure of the segments and which topics receive focus; how individual news segments are focused; who is included and left out of the parameters of the segment; who benefits economically from each news segment (some is always benefiting financially) and whether the segments address this information; etc.
Please feel free to use class instruction from today as a possible model, particularly when I analyze the NBC Nightly News through Herman/Chomsky’s second filter. You do not need to discuss their “Propaganda Model” (that will likely be the focus of the final paper)c — just address the single issue of appealing to consumer demographics.
