Week 6: Writing Exercise #4
Confession Prompt:
First, make a list of confessions. Then go back and choose one to expand on and turn into a short story, which you will write and share this week.
The idea is that anything considered a “confession” is going to be prime material for a story. It’s important to start off by jotting down a list of anything you can think of, allowing yourself to brainstorm. —Try to list as many deep dark secrets as you can. These can be your own personal secrets, the secrets of other people, or, you can make up secrets as long as they feel believable and real.
The beauty of treating everything you write in a creative way, is that it does not matter whether or not it is all real, evolved from something that was real, or completely made up. Only the story matters. Again, this is why I claim fiction for everything I write and usually change the names of any characters inspired from real life. That way, no one can be upset at you. Plus, it puts the focus where it should be: on the writing itself. My graduate program mentor, Bobbie Louise Hawkins, once told me, “The more you become a writer, the more you exonerate yourself as a human being.” She also said that everything we observe in our lives is fair material to write about. To me, that’s what the profession is all about — people with a natural tendency to observe and internalize the world around them. Charles Baudelaire called this being a “flâneur,” or “a botanist of the sidewalk.” He said, “Few men are gifted with the capacity of seeing; there are fewer still who possess the power of expression.”
So to summarize, the prompt is this: first, make a list of confessions. Then, go back and pick one of the confessions to turn into a short story, in any point of view you’d like! Please write it and post it by the end of the week.
