    Students are required to complete response papers. These papers are informal
    responses to the class readings.
    Reading for the Response Papers
    When reading an essay for the first time, it is beneficial for the reader to make quick
    remarks about the assigned reading. It is also beneficial to record any reactions to the
    essay.
    After completing the initial reading, read the essay for a second time. While reading the
    essay for the second time, write out any reactions to the essay. Read from the writer’s
    point of view, and have an understanding about what the writer is trying to accomplish.

    Writing the Response Papers
    When writing a response to an essay, please adhere to the following requirements:
    In the first paragraph of the response,
    introduce the author and the title of the work
    state the main idea of the essay
    summarize your response to the essay
    In the paragraphs that follow,
    identify and explore your reactions to the essay
    Works Cited page
    Using the handbook as a guide, create a Works Cited page
    The majority of the response paper should be your reaction to the essay, NOT a
    summary of the essay. You may state the reasons why you agree or disagree with the
    writer. You may also identify points that the author may not have introduced. Please
    remember, this is not a summary of the essay. Rather, focus on your reactions to the
    essay.
    Each response paper must be at least one page long. As always, please use proper MLA
    format, including Times New Roman font with the font size of 12. All response papers
    must include a Works Cited page. Submissions that do not meet the minimum
    requirements will not be accepted.

    You may write about any of the class handouts or the assigned class readings from the
    text.

    You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

    Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

    Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

    The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
