Instead of writing a commercial, you may choose to craft a news story for the web. Refer to examples posted in Module Five. First, identify a topic or current event that is important to you. Tips:
It should be timely.
It should be relevant.
It should be interesting to you.
It should be interesting to others.
It should be original. (Not old news.)
It can be local, regional or national in scope.
Ask yourself: What is the lead?
Consider the W’s of journalism for crafting the body of the story: Who, What, Where, When, Why
Delivery: The article should be 12-15 lines, separated largely as their own paragraphs – see examples. Make sure your article is clear, to the point and interesting. Include your interview quotes, if possible. Keep an eye on punctuation and grammar. Be sure it has a headline, a sub-heading, your name and the date. Just like the articles you read from CNN, AJC, NYT.
