we learned about social structure. Our social structure is what surrounds us (we can also think of this as our environment). Our social structure guides our behavior. Six components make up our social structure. They are as follows:
-Culture
-Social Class
-Social Status (we occupy this-passive label)
-Roles (we play this-active)
-Groups
-Social Institutions
Please take some time to personally reflect on your social structure. How have all of these components shaped who you are? Did one or two components have more of an impact than another one? Next, draw out your social structure. Place yourself (or a representation of yourself) in the center of the paper then draw six circles surrounding yourself. These six circles represent these six components. In each one please comment on that component of social structure. You can do so symbolically with pictures or with words.
After you’ve done this, please write several bullet points which address the following questions:
1. Indicate which statuses are ascribed and which are achieved
2. Note a time when you have experienced status inconsistency, role strain and/or role conflict
3. Note if you have any master statuses. Please explain why or why not?
You are free to use any method you’d like to complete this assignment. Here are some suggestions:
Draw it out on a physical piece of paper. Take a picture of your drawing and upload the picture to the assignment. (might be the best choice)
Create a single PowerPoint slide. It’s pretty easy to import images and create shapes on the slide to illustrate your structure. Upload the PowerPoint file.
Use an online mapping tool like Mindomo (Links to an external site.). There is a free version, but the free version has limitations when exporting files. You should be able to generate a link to share.
