Question 1:
Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, review the Narrowing a Topic and Developing a Research Question (Links to an external site.) web page and Integrating Research (Links to an external site.) tutorial. These resources will help you in developing a topic.
It is also recommended that you review these tutorials from the Ashford University Library:
Database Search Tips (Links to an external site.) Evaluating Sources (Links to an external site.)
You may also want to review the Sample Final Paper GEN499, so that you can start preparing your rough draft that is due in Week 4.
Reflect: When considering a research topic, consider an interesting topic that is worth further research. For instance, having a strong opinion on a specific topic may deter you from thinking more critically, and therefore the research might end up being one-sided. It is a good idea to pick a topic in which you can provide a good argument for both sides of the societal issue.
Write: For this discussion, address the following prompts:
Identify a global societal issue from the following list that you would consider researching further for your Week 5 Final Paper:
Lack of education
Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper. Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly. Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic. Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic. Download and attach a PDF copy of one of the peer-reviewed scholarly articles that you found from the Ashford University Library to your answer using the “Attach” function located below your response.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response. Please use correct APA format when writing in-text citations (see In-Text Citation Helper (Links to an external site.)) and references (see Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.)).
Respond to Peers: Review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least two of your peers by Day 7. In each response, provide comments on your classmate’s topic idea and ask a question that prompts your classmate to think more critically about how to explore the research topic in more detail. Each participation post should be a minimum of 75 words.

Final Paper Topic:
For my research paper I chose government accountability and corruption from the list of topics. One method I used for narrowing the list to one topic, was an interest in the subject matter and wanting to learn more about it (Golden Gate University, n.d.). The topic interested me because I live in a state and area that is known for having issues with government accountability and corruption. Because the topic of government accountability and corruption is broad, I generated a list of sub-topics from the main topic (Ashford University, n.d.). The narrowed list of sub-topics provided me with a focused topic. The focused topic allowed me to create several research questions based upon my focused topic. An example of my selection method:
Broad Topic: Government Accountability and Corruption
Narrowed Topic: Illinois State Governance
Focused Topic: Cook County and City of Chicago Politics
Research Question: How can the Cook County suburban city governments compete with the City of Chicago?
Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
When conducting research, it is important to ensure that the information provided is reliable, factual, and accurate. One way that the reader can be assured that those criteria have been met is to locate scholarly articles related to the subject matter. When analyzing the material to determine if it comes from a scholarly source there are several methods that the reader may employ to vet the source.
Initial Appraisal:
If the material is from a physical source, such as a book or journal, the researcher can check the bibliographic content for the date of publication, author, and publisher. If the information is from the internet, the researcher can check the authorship and the publishing body.
Content Analysis:
The material should reach an intended and focused audience. The material should be written objectively and cover varied opinions in relationship to the topic.
Currency:
The material should show currency to the subject matter. If the researcher is investigating a more current topic, then the source provided should be from recent articles and publications. Older information sources may be scholarly, but if they have not been updated or revised, the information provided could be dated and inaccurate.
All information used in a research paper should come from scholarly sources or from professional sources to ensure it is appropriate and comes from authority (How to critically analyze information sources, n.d.). By using scholarly and professional sources when researching and writing, the author validates the material for the reader.
Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic.
In researching Cook County, Illinois, and City of Chicago politics, I came across David Hamilton’s article, Regimes and Regional Governance: The Case of Chicago, in the Journal of Urban Affairs. Mr. Hamilton writes about how public policy in cities is influenced by private firms and business elites (2002). Mr. Hamilton’s article examines how support for urban initiatives seems to end at the City of Chicago city limits and suburban Cook County city governments fail to garner the same financial support.
Anne Friedman’s paper, Doing Battle with the Patronage Army: Politics, Courts, and Personnel Administration in Chicago, found in the Public Administration Review, examines, and summarizes the impact of the Shakman decrees. The Shakman decrees were a series of rulings that affected hiring and firing of city and county employees for political reasons (1988). The paper supports my research concerning City of Chicago and Cook County government accountability practices and the corruption found within both governmental agencies.
Scholarly sources add to the research because they are unbiased and have been carefully researched. Scholarly articles are peer reviewed before they are published. The peer review process subjects the material to quality review and peer reviewed articles ensure the information is authoritative.

The topic I considered is Poverty and Income inequality. This is something that I have personal interest in.
Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
One way to narrow down research is to use specific words, for example: I am researching poverty and income inequality. I can not just type in “poverty” there are a lot of articles to go through instead, I typed in ‘poverty’ and ‘inequality’.
Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
Look for what year the source was published, along with the website the article came from
Author, are there sub links for the references, is this author credited?
When clicking the sub links do, they bring you to the right article of reference?
Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic.
Psychology’s Contributions to Understanding and Alleviating Poverty and Economic Inequality: Introduction to the Special Section is about why Psychological research is important to understanding and eliminating poverty. Bullock (2019) states “Psychological research is crucial to illuminating and interrupting the damaging consequences of economic hardship and disparities, understanding interpersonal and institutional responses to poverty and economic inequality, and developing effective poverty alleviation programs and policies” (introduction).
Reducing Poverty and Inequality Through Preschool-to-Third-Grade Prevention Services is about the importance of education and how to help reducing the poverty inequality. According to Reynolds, Ou, Mondi, and Giovanelli (2019), “early childhood programs have been found to be an effective strategy for promoting educational success and economic well-being, but the availability of high-quality programs that are aligned and integrated with schools across the learning continuum is limited” (introduction).
Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
Using a scholarly source in your paper you know the information that you are referencing is true, therefore making your paper true.

I’m stuck on a Accounting question and need an explanation.
This was a team project but I am doing everything on my own at the last minute since my team is not on point.
Your team should use the scenario below of tax related information to respond, in memorandum form, to Thomas Drake’s inquiry regarding the Section 199A deduction and its applicability to his business.
One submission of the tax research memorandum per team is expected.
Thomas Drake’s 2018 Tax Scenario
Thomas Drake is a small business owner, operating a manufacturing plant in Chicago, Illinois (as an S-Corp.) He has heard about a new tax break called Section 199A (deduction for qualified business income) wherein he may be entitled to a deduction of up to 20% of his qualified business income. If he can qualify for this deduction, it would result in significant tax savings for his business. Consequently, he contacts your accounting firm to find out exactly what this deduction entails, and how, or if, he can qualify.
Thomas provides the CPA firm with the following information regarding his 2018 estimated income from his business, Rebecca, his spouse’s income, and asset and payroll information related to his company. (Thomas and Rebecca file “married filing jointly.”)
Item Amount
Net Income from Operations (S Corp) $175,000
Spouse’s (Rebecca) Income (from unrelated business) $50,000
Corporate Payroll $150,000
Corporate Total Assets $1,500,000
Taxable Income from Form 1040 $160,000
(Total Tax for Drake’s after allowable deductions unrelated to the business)
Your team will prepare a tax research memorandum detailing the statutory framework of this deduction, a thorough explanation of Section 199A and all the key definitions, a determination of whether Thomas qualifies for the deduction, a determination of the amount of this deduction, and what Thomas could do to maximize this deduction in the future. The memorandum must be supported by tax research using IRC code, tax cases if any, and other scholarly journals and references. Since some of this data is estimated, he is asking for a general analysis of his tax situation relative to this deduction.
Some specific issues which must be addressed are the following:
What is qualified business income (QBI)? What is included and what is not? What is a qualified trade or business (SSTB)? Any limitations, income or otherwise on this deduction? What are some planning strategies for help Thomas maximize this deduction in future years? What is an estimate of the amount of the deduction for 2018, if any?
The memorandum should be 7 – 10 pages with references to the IRC code and other tax support. This memorandum will serve as the basis for the team PowerPoint presentation due in Week 8.
Performing tax research to find correct answers to a given tax situation, and composing memorandums summarizing these findings, are important parts of tax practice. As outlined in your text, there are several authoritative primary tax law sources. The first, the Internal Revenue Code, is the law enacted by Congress. The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service publish a number of materials that interpret and provide decisions, pronouncing their interpretation and application of the Code, including treasury regulations, revenue rulings, and revenue procedures. Finally, courts are often asked to hear tax disputes between taxpayers and the United States, and these courts issue rulings that interpret and apply the tax law, creating additional tax authority in the process. These combined writings constitute primary tax law authority, and these are the authorities that tax practitioners rely upon when a client asks for their opinions regarding how a proposed or a completed transaction should be treated for tax purposes.
Some of the more significant guidelines for this tax memorandum include the following:
Your submission must be completed in Microsoft Word. You must use a reasonably easy-to-read font, such as Times New Roman or Arial, in at least a 12-point font size. Each page must have at least a 1-inch margin on all sides and be double spaced. Appropriate citations are required. The tax memorandum must be in traditional tax memorandum format, as outlined in your text. . All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the Plagiarism Policy. The team paper is due at the end of Week 7 of the course. This assignment is worth 200 points. You will be graded on the overall quality of your submission, including the quality and thoroughness of your analysis and the professionalism of your submission. (See the grading rubric)
Tax research memorandums use a fairly standard format and structure. The four parts include the following.
Facts: In this section, you summarize the facts about the transaction or events that are relevant and material to the tax questions being asked. Frame them as precisely and succinctly as possible, and write them so that they can be understood by someone who has no knowledge of the underlying facts. Issues: This is a succinct question that you are trying to answer or resolve in the memorandum. Analysis: This section contains all of the substantive analysis that you needed to perform in order to come to reach a conclusion on the issue presented. It discusses, in logical order, the various tax authorities to establish the tax rule or rules that apply to the fact pattern given. This includes such efforts as an analysis of the facts of these other cases and the language of the applicable Code section(s) at issue. Once the rules are established, it then applies those rules to the facts in the case. Conclusions: This section provides the answer to the taxpayer’s inquiry along with any tax planning suggestions for future implementation.
I have also included how this would be graded to make you that everything is included that is needed.

Demand and Supply Exercises
Directions: Fill in the boxes (QD, QS, D, S, P, Q) in the next three demand and supply exercises. Based upon the event, what can we expect to occur for the market? Use a “0” (zero) if nothing will occur for that particular variable, a “+” (plus) if an increase, or a “-“ (negative) if a reduction. QD stands for Quantity Demanded, QS for Quantity Supplied, D for Demand, S for Supply, P for Price, and Q for Quantity.Integrative Essay (Netflix)
I’m working on a Business exercise and need support.
For this first integrative essay, you should write primarily about ethics, corruption and international/global business.
The assignment: Complete a three-to-five page essay (1500-2000 word count?).
After viewing the first six episodes of season 1 of the Netflix series The Mechanism, discuss in your essay:
Why you think the business corruption you saw take place is occurring. Could any character we see in the show have prevented the corruption from occurring? If so, who? Specifically, what could they have done to stop it or prevent it? Also, could anyone do anything to prevent such corruption from reoccurring in the future?

Use 1.5 spacing and Arial 10 font. Spell and grammar check as you normally would for any scholarly paper. Also, feel free to consult the Style Guide (on Canvas) for suggestions on style, organization, and such.
I will provide the Netflix account if you do not have one, there’s 6 episode, 45 minutes each.
The mechanism is talking about the corruption scheme involving the Brazilian government.
