Write a 5-6 page (1500-2000 word) persuasive essay answering the question: Under what conditions is political power legitimate?
The smaller assignments have assessed whether you’ve understood the readings (the summary papers) and whether you’ve thought about them individually (the discussions); this assignment is intended to assess whether you can pull the readings together, and use them to make an argument of your own.
My advice is to start with by clearly giving your answer in the first paragraph, and use the rest of your paper to (A) provide evidence or argumentation drawn from the readings in favor of your answer, then (B) consider and reject alternative answers, all through evidence or argumentation drawn from the readings.
I do want you to root your essay in the readings for this class, which means citing them extensively – at least a dozen citations, and more are probably better. You’re welcome to use any citation style you’re comfortable with, but pick one and stick with it. I use Harvard myself, but I’ve used Chicago, MLA, APA, and so on.
Because I haven’t taught for a while, I don’t have an example of an A paper to show you. But I can show you an example of a good thesis (that is, the answer to the question of when political power is legitimate):
Good example: Political power is only legitimate when used with the consent of the governed; Locke is correct, and I will defend him in this essay.
Bad example: Many people have things to say about political legitimacy, and everyone thinks something different.
Notice how specific the first example is, and how vague the second is. It would be very challenging to write a focused argument around the second, but you can probably already see how an argument starts in the first one.
