T‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌WO PART ASSIGNMENT
part I
Consider the following situations:
(Normal Perception)
Anna is a physiologically normal, adult human. One day, she looks down and has the visual experience as of seeing hands. On this basis, she forms the belief that she has hands.
(Abnormal Perception)
Brianna, though she believes herself to be a physiologically normal, adult human, is in fact a brain-in-a-vat. One day, she looks down and has the visual experience as of seeing hands. On this basis, she forms the belief that she has hands.
(Learning from Mom)
Corey is a physiologically normal, human toddler. One day, his mom tells him that spiders have eight legs. On this basis, he forms the belief that spiders have eight legs. Corey’s mom is generally trustworthy, though Corey has never tried to confirm what she tells him, and lacks the conceptual sophistication to believe that ‘My mom is a reliable source of information’.
(Forgotten Evidence)
Eve believes that Amy Winehouse performed with the National Jazz Youth Orchestra as a teenager. She learned this by watching the reputable 2015 documentary film, Amy, though she no longer remembers having seen the film.
1. One view of justification we considered is Access Internalism. According to the Access Internalist, thinkers are justified in their beliefs insofar as they are aware of (or could become aware of) evidence for the truth of those be‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌liefs.
Intuitively, Anna and Brianna are both justified in believing that they have hands. Can the Access Internalist explain this intuition? If so, how? If not, why not?
According to Access Internalism, is Corey justified in believing that spiders have eight legs? Why or why not?
According to Access Internalism, is Eve justified in believing that Amy Winehouse performed with the National Jazz Youth Orchestra? Why or why not?
2. Another view of justification we considered is Reliabilist Externalism. According to the Reliabilist Externalist, thinkers are justified in their beliefs insofar as those beliefs were produced by reliable belief-forming processes.

3. Evidentialism (Feldman and Conee)
Explain why Kornblith’s case of the Headstrong Physicist might pose a problem for Evidentialism.
Why do Feldman and Conee think that the case is actually consistent with evidentialism?
Do you agree with Feldman and Conee’s argument? Why ‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌or why not?
