A 25-page (minimum) historiographical paper, based on secondary sources. Students should not simply creative a narrative history based on secondary sources. Rather, they should trace the development of historians’ understanding of their topic. Students must use at least 22 secondary sources, at least half of which should be monograph books. All sources must be scholarly, either from an appropriate academic press by a scholar, or else an article from a scholarly journal or edited collection. Students will identify major authors, viewpoints, interpretive schools, the impact of the times in which key historians published their research, and, where appropriate, suggest possible new directions for scholarship.
First Draft: You will be required to turn in a 7-8 page draft of your paper. This should include an introduction with a working thesis. Remember that the introduction should establish the major topics and direction of your paper. The rest will essentially be a fragment of your final project. You will obviously only have a fraction of the total project completed at this point, so the paper should include brief, [bracketed] descriiptions of how this draft will fit into your final project, and then major sections yet to be added. It should also include a bibliography.
Research prospectus: This assignment will demonstrate the feasibility of their project, its current status, and a plan for completion. It should identify the topic and the major question that the student is asking. It must contain a working thesis statement and explain how this paper will contribute to knowledge of the topic. It should have a working bibliography; this means that it should include significant secondary (and primary sources, if pursuing a research paper), though it is acknowledged that this will not be a complete bibliography. Finally, it should lay out a plan to complete the students’ research and writing, including resources to find and estimated time to complete each step.
The Research Prospectus is due tomorrow with a list of around 15 sources (if not 15 it’s fine).
The first draft is due March 9th.
