< < Cause, Effect, & Analysis Essay (20%) < < Overview: You will first present some causes and effects related to your sustainability topic of choice, and then based on your findings, you will write an analysis or, in other words, you will make an argument about your topic; there are many ways to do that. Here are a few questions to guide you: How much of a threat does it pose? How much time do we have to find a solution? < < The essay should be 5-6 pages not including the Works Cited page, and you should use at least five authoritative sources; you can use five sources of your own finding or a combination of your own sources and the articles we read in Week 3. When it comes to web sources, be sure they pass the ABC test (for example, the only web sources you use should have an “about” button that you’ve studied and approved etc.). < < Solutions should not be suggested in this essay except for a brief mention in the conclusion if you wish; however, as you conduct research for this essay you can collect information about solutions to use in your final exam. The final exam (which is worth 10% of your grade) will give you the opportunity to revisit your research topic and provide solutions which should be novel, creative, and ultimately well researched, clearly explained, and thoroughly supported. < < Here is a checklist that compiles the elements of college essay writing you have been practicing: < 1. Your essay should be thesis-driven and organized with paragraphs that are connected to and unified with the thesis < 2. The essay must have an introductory paragraph with a hook, background, and a thesis statement that responds to the prompt < 3. Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence providing the point the paragraph is making and should include quoted, paraphrased or summarized passages as evidence to support the topic sentences. Use quotes to support your ideas not as a substitute for your own ideas avoiding lengthy quotations of more than two or three lines: most of the paper must be your own ideas. The body paragraphs should also include explanation and analysis of the topic sentence < 4. All quotes should be framed – introduce quotes with your own words and a comma or colon AND comment them so that your reader knows how it’s relevant to your argument < 5. Your entire essay should flow smoothly – the logic should be clear from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph < 6. Underline your thesis and topic sentences to make your reader’s experience more organized < 7. Sentences should be free of grammar, punctuation, or sentence errors < 8. Your essay should have correct documentation style which means an accurate Works Cited page with matching in-text citations within the text < 9. Sources should be found on the MJC’s library website in the databases or via subject directory OR they should be web sources that you have verified to be authoritative (no Wikipedia, the web site must have an “about” page that you approve of etc.) < 10.
