PART 1
Please read the entire Introduction section of Approaches to Art: A New Introduction to Art History. In the paperback version of the book, this is found on pages xi-xv. You don’t need to read the Art History Exercise or Studio Exercise instructions. Then, respond to the following reflection questions:
1. The author talks about how when we look at art, we see it through a pair of “culture glasses,” and through our own individual perspectives. What are some parts of your identity that affect the “glasses” that you wear when looking at art? For example, I could say that I look at art through the cultural lens of being a woman living in America (specifically the Midwest). I also see through the individual lens of being a costume designer. Because I have lots of experience looking and thinking about clothing and textiles, I am more likely to pay attention when those elements show up in a work of art.
2. What kinds of art do you enjoy or appreciate, if any? Why? What kinds of art do you find it difficult to enjoy or appreciate? Why do you think that is?
3. Take a closer look at Augusta Savage’s work that is featured in this chapter – Lift Every Voice. Does knowing more about Augusta Savage’s life and work make this piece more interesting or enjoyable for you? How does learning some context impact your experience as a viewer?
PART 2
One of the artists featured in our text this week is Mine Okubo. Do some research to find one work by Mine Okubo that was not in the textbook. You will be completing a short analysis of a different work using the different strategies discussed in the lectures and textbook.
You will be looking at your chosen work through a formal analysis lens, a contextual/biographical lens, and an iconographic lens. So, for the artwork you have selected, you should answer:
1. What is the title of the artwork, and what year was it made? Include an image of the work!
2. What are the formal elements you observe in the work? What kinds of colors, shapes, or lines do you see? Is the work balanced and symmetrical? Is there a lot of rhythm and movement? Clear emphasis? (These are just ideas to get you started, please discuss any elements and principles that are relevant to your chosen work. Refer to the Week 1 materials for guidance.)
3. What are some important biographical details of the artist’s life that impact this artwork? Where were they living when they created it? How might the details of their life have impacted the work? What is the greater context of the artist’s life/work? You will need to do some extra research here, but the textbook is a good starting point.
4. What symbols do you see in the work? Remember that many different things can be symbols. A symbol is anything that represents another idea, person, etc. For example, things like the sun, moon, window, tree, etc. might be symbolic when present in a work of art. How might your “culture glasses” impact how you see and interpret the symbols in the work?
Complete this assignment in writing, you should be writing 1 paragraph (about 100-160 words) for each type of analysis, for a total of about 300-500 words. Please upload written submissions as either Word documents or PDFs.
PART 3
Please read all of Chapter 1: Art and Culture in Approaches to Art. You do not need to read the paragraphs labeled “art history exercise” or “studio exercise.”
Then, respond to the following questions:
1. Before you read this chapter, what associations did you have with abstract art? This could be names of artists that you associate with abstraction, personal opinions about abstract art, etc. Did reading this chapter change your thinking about the purpose of abstract art? (No is a totally acceptable answer, just back it up with some explanation!)
2. In your own words, summarize Ferdinanda Florence’s thoughts about why abstraction can be an effective choice for supernatural or religious subject matter.
3. The book spotlights 3 artists and their approaches to the concept of death – Hans Holbein, Jose Guadalope Posada, and Kane Quaye. Using both the textbook and Google to find information, fill out the chart that is attached to this assignment. The first row asks you to list when and where the artists were living and working. The second row asks how the artist deals with the subject of death in their work. The last row asks you to identify cultural traditions that influenced their work and decisions. Download the attached Word document, fill it out, save either as a Word doc or PDF, and upload it to your submission. If you don’t use Microsoft Word, I have also attached the document as a PDF. You can use it as a template to create the same kind of chart in the word processor of your choice. Just make sure to submit it as a PDF.
4. For an extra credit point, find some of the old Starbucks logos that Ferdinanda Florence mentions early in this chapter, and attach 2 versions here, with your argument for which version of the logo is the best.
