This week, you need to secure your interview and have your questions ready.
When contacting someone to be interviewed, be sure to introduce yourself and then let them know that you wish to interview them for a college assignment so you learn more about the career in which you are interested. If you want to add a bit to this, mentioning that this matters to you beyond fulfilling the assignment and that this person was your first choice, go right ahead. If someone says, “no,” ask someone else. If they agree, thank them and then set up the interview. In person is great, but these days it is more than fine to do this by phone or Facetime or Zoom, etc. What is not acceptable is a series of emails or text messages; these do not make for a real interview. You can offer to come to their workplace or to meet anywhere convenient for them and for their schedule. Buy them lunch or dinner if you’d like (but seriously, there’s no need to spend money on this, nor should an interviewee expect money for doing this). If the person asks to see the questions beforehand, send them. If they would like to see this essay when it is finished, agree and send it to them.
The links I’ve provided give great advice on how to interview someone. A few of them are geared toward interviewing someone looking for a job, so not all the information is relevant to this assignment (but good for you to know when you go out on job interviews, to get into the head of the person interviewing YOU!) In the Short Guide link, the one bullet point has eight questions that will work for any interview. In one of the links, “How To Conduct An Interview-Questions To Ask,” some of these questions could be of use to you, but again, some are written for someone seeking employment. Also, there are some there one should not ask, not appropriate for this assignment:
Avoid the following:
What would your most respected critic say of your strengths, areas for development, and future potential in your field?
How sensitive are you to accepting constructive criticism?
Do you generally ask for permission or forgiveness when making decisions?
Tell me about a time when you may not have erred on the side of caution when you should have.
You should have at least fifteen questions prepared, though you might not need to ask all of them. Also, depending on how it goes, you might come up with new questions on the spot. As noted in the one link, avoid closed-ended questions-that is, ones which can be answered with a yes or no. Avoid personal questions.
The format for the final essay will be posted next week; for now, focus on conducting the interview as soon as possible and having the questions prepared. If you want me to review them, send them to Messages here on our Blackboard page.
If you are having trouble finding a person to interview, first try asking other people you know if they know someone. Try simple Google searches based on your region. If you are taking courses in your major, ask your professors if they could refer someone. If no one comes up by this weekend, let me know, and I will do my best to help.
All I need from you here this week is an update on your progress, a paragraph of at least 150 words. –
