This task, inspired by Peter Elbow, is both a review of the concepts covered in Elbow’s and Bartholomae’s essays (in terms of the utility and efficacy of teaching academic discourse) and an exercise in distinguishing academic discourse from informal discourse.
You will write two paragraphs, in each of which you explain the basic contentions in the Elbow-Bartholomae debate. Elbow argues for a student-centered pedagogy, while Bartholomae’s approach is more teacher-centered, but what does that mean exactly? What attitude do they each propose toward academic discourse?
The twist: the first paragraph should be written using an academic tone and diction—use a style, in other words that you might find in a scholarly journal. Jargon, abstractions, and allusions are all welcome, but it should, of course, make sense—this is not a parody, in other words. The second paragraph should provide an exactly equivalent explanation but should be written in whatever tone and diction you would use to explain the issue to someone completely unfamiliar with the subject and unversed in academic discourse. Use common vocabulary, simple syntax, concrete examples.
Think about the stylistic differences between the two paragraphs: what are they and what purposes do they serve?
