This semester we have covered the history of the world from ca. 1500 to the present. For the final examination, write a very concise essay (see details below), explaining what you have learned in this course. Imagine, for example, that you are asked by friends or family, “what is the most important and most interesting thing that you have learned in this course?” Do NOT simply list facts! Rather, this is an opportunity to think about what this course is all about. Why is it important to study history, particularly the last five hundred years of history. Does it help us understand the present any better? The nature of human beings? Or the nature of social, political, and economic structures?
This is a chance for you to reevaluate everything you have learned in the course and distill one major pattern or theme that stood out to you. (Do NOT simply regurgitate your theme-based argument in your essays. This has to go beyond your theme and your past essays).
Remember that this is an examination, even though it is in the form of an essay. That means that you will be graded on two major parts: 1. Your ability to demonstrate that you have completed all course assignments (readings and films); 2. That you are able to critically analyze and synthesize course material and develop your own thoughts about it, in the form of an argument.
Again, do NOT simply list facts! And do NOT simply repeat what you have written in your previous essay! Think hard. about everything you have learned in the course and discern a pattern that brings it all together.
Your essay must adhere to the following:
One full page (do not go over into second page) double spaced (that means you will have between 21-22 lines).
Times New Roman font size 12
1 inch margins all around
A title page with your name and the title of the class.
Consider this a typical scholarly essay with an introduction, two part-body, and conclusion.
Introductions and conclusions are to be no more than three lines in length.
Grammar, spelling, etc. count.
No quotes at all for this particular assignment- do not use the author’s or translator’s words, paraphrase and cite the information.
Turn in the assignment to MyClasses, on 8 July.
*Personally I feel like religion would work very well for this topic. It’s asking for one major pattern or theme and throughout the course…religion was still involved in majority topics.
