This project directly addresses the learning outcome statement from the syllabus, “Identify and offer explanations of social inequality as they relate to social interaction and institutions.”
Instructions: For this project you are to spend a week looking around your world to specifically find instances where people are not being treated equally or fairly. This may be based on any dimension of inequality (social class, race, ethnic background, sex, gender, ability, age, etc.). Do not be rude and insert yourself into a situation. You are not required to act or attempt to change the situation. You must make note of at least four instances of inequality across the week. You can find more and add them into your assignment but then the detailed responses should apply to only four examples.
Take a week and find examples of inequality. Make a note on your phone or a memo, etc. DO NOT take pictures of people or addresses or anything else identifiable. Do not use people’s names either – particularly if you know the person. Instead use ‘friend’ or ‘roommate’ or ‘boyfriend’, etc. These may also be from your own experiences but again do not identify yourself.
Make sure you also make note of the details. Who is the person that is being treated unfairly? Who is the person treating someone unfairly? Where did it happen (again be generic here a ‘store’, a ‘restaurant’, etc.)? What was the reaction? What were the circumstances leading up to the act? What happened afterward?
At the end of the week, list all of these episodes and describe them. Again you will likely have more than four if you have been paying attention.
Then, choose four to complete the following:
In each instance, can you identify a prejudice that might have been behind the unequal treatment? Where in society would this have been learned? (Think institutions here.) For any institution beyond the family, give an example as to how this institution may have taught this thought.
Did the person who did the discriminatory behavior gain anything by treating someone unfairly? Did the person have anything to lose by treating the person fairly?
Was privilege involved? If so, what kind of privilege was it?
How would the interaction have been different without the discriminatory behavior?
