This paper is for a Philosophy of Art class.
This is the textbook we use for this class, Introducing Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art 2nd Edition by Darren Hudson Hick.
I picked the topic since I am interested in food but can’t figure out a thesis.
Here are the requirements from the professor.
Write a 1000-1500 word (3-5 page double spaced) argumentative paper on a topic related to class content.
I want you to write a paper where you have something to say. If you don’t think you have anything to say please reflect on the things that interest you, the things that you do, the things that you think or talk about. People often don’t take positions because they view them as traps, places where they can be criticized. This is the wrong attitude. Taking a position is about exploring the idea, not being right or wrong. In this paper I want you to explore an idea. However don’t just explore the surface, really get into it. I don’t want to know your first take, but I’m genuinely interested in your thoughtful take.
Evaluation will be based on:
Organization based on your thesis
Focusing on the interesting path, not the easy one
Clarity
Quality of argument (plausibility, identifying implications and assumptions, showing knowledge of limits, and identifying foundational suppo rt)
Depth, not breadth
Originality and demonstration of thought
Some generalized grading benchmarks (neither conclusive nor exhaustive):
If you don’t have a thesis (a point to the paper that you support and use to filter out information), your paper will be a ‘C’ at best.
If you have a thesis but say things that do not show more than cursory thought, your paper will be a ‘B’ at best.
If you show rigor, understanding, thought, and awareness that facts are both insufficient and need to be filtered, then we can start talking about an ‘A’.
Tips for Papers
Try to be interesting. I care about your contribution. This does not mean that the first thing that comes out of your brain/mouth is valuable, but it does mean that I care about what you can come up with if you put some energy into it.
The structure you are used to (introduction, 3 different reasons, conclusion) was meant to be used by kids in middle school and phased out before high school. It is a useful tool but it is not what I am looking for in a paper. Use it to organize and set up your paper (you should be able to cover the important information in one paragraph) but then develop one idea.
Have a thesis and make it clear.
Show the complexities, don’t avoid them. We fear the complex parts, but that’s where the good stuff is.
