This is the only writing assignment for this course. What I want you to do is this: Write me a philosophical essay on this topic:
Is God real?
This can be the God of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, another religious tradition, a philosophical conception of God, or a personal conception of God. Also, if you believe in multiple deities, then your argument can be “Why Gods Are Real.”
Tell me why you believe in God (or gods), or why you don’t believe in God (or gods). Give me reasons why you believe your position to be the true position. This means that I want you to provide support for whatever position you take. This has to be more than just “I believe that God is real, because it’s just obviously true.” That’s not satisfying in philosophy. The discipline demands a lot more than that. If you think whatever position you take is “obvious,” keep in mind that it might not be as obvious (or even as clearly true) as you think.
So, think carefully about why you might think it is obvious, and give me those reasons (supporting facts, evidence, examples, and arguments) why you say it’s so.
You will not be graded on the position you take. Whether I agree with your position is irrelevant with this assignment! You will instead be graded on how you argue for your position: Have you at least tried to provide reasons and/or evidence to show why we should accept God as real or unreal? Is your argument logically consistent or not? If there are areas in your argument that you know aren’t the strongest (that need further work, further thought, further research, further evidence, etc.), have you at least had enough intellectual honesty to admit that this is the case or not?
So, all I’m asking for is for sincere philosophical work, done as best as you can in your first philosophy course! It’s not going to be perfect, I know. But I just want you to put in a good effort so that you can possibly improve your own argument and improve your abilities to tackle future philosophical projects!
Even though the paper is due right when our course ends, I will email you not only your grade but also comments on your assignment.
Further information:
You may use examples, arguments, or ideas from the philosophies we cover in our class, but you don’t have to. The reasons and/or evidence that you use to support your argument can be entirely from your own sources (including personal experience or meditations) if you want.
The essay has to be at least 5 pages long. You do not need to include a cover-page or title-page. Just put your name at the top of the first page, include the date and the class number beneath it, then state your paper title, and then just begin the text of your essay right below that all the way down to the bottom of the page.
You may write more than 5 pages if you want, but you don’t have to.
The essay must be double-spaced and in 12-point font. I’m not concerned about the style of font. Just make sure it’s something an average joe like myself can easily read.
I am not greatly concerned about format. Every time a student asks me about what format I want, my eyes start to glaze over. But, most students seem to know “MLA format,” whatever that is. So, use that if you know it. If you don’t… I don’t care what format you use, then. I’m a substance man, dammit! Not a format man!
One more thing: It is very advisable to avoid making rhetorical questions. Such as saying things like, “If God didn’t create the world, then what did?” as if that question actually answers itself. It doesn’t. You have to actually tell me: Is it possible that the universe could have come into existence through some other means than through God’s creation? If not, why? If so, how? So, if you do use rhetorical questions (and you really don’t have to), be sure to then immediately provide honest-to-goodness answers to them!
