This is all of the information:
Turning point and Alternate History Project: “What If?” (yes, it is a direct rip-off from a bunch of other stuff, but let’s not bother with that!)
This assignment is designed to encourage you to think critically about the consequences of historical events. A historical turning point is a major event that has had a significant effect on history. Turning points are often the result of a series of related events that led up to that crucial juncture.
For this project, you must find a critical turning point in history and analyze its causes and effects through careful research. It is entirely up to you to select a major event that has had significant, indelible repercussions in History. If you need help in deciding on an event, talk to me and I can offer some guidance. Here are some general rules to help get you started:
You must select an Historical event that is within the time-frame of the class, i.e. if we are studying Western Civilization from ancient times to 1648 the event you choose must be within that period.
It must be related to the area we are focusing on. If, for example, the class covers American History, you may not do a history of Ancient China.
Once you select your turning point, you must go back in time and choose at least 5 connected events that led up to the turning point. You must show a clear connection and progression among the events. They may be natural events (i.e. an unexpected storm, eclipse, earthquake, etc.) beyond human control, or they may be specifically planned and controlled by human agency.
You must describe each of the events and evaluate their importance and repercussions. Write at least 1-2 paragraphs for each of the 5 events. Within each, describe what happened and include all relevant information that will allow an observer (me) to understand the consequences.
Finally, describe and analyze your turning point. Explain why it happened the way it did and why it has had such a major impact in world history.
Alternate History: “what if?” Once you have completed the 5 events and your turning point, you must then go back and do an alternate history type of scenario:
Select one of the events in your timeline and imagine that something goes differently; for example, if it is a war, what if the outcome of a crucial battle was different? How would history have changed? Or, if it is a natural event, what if it had not happened? If it is an important character in history, what if their life turned out different? What if Julius Caesar had not been assassinated? What if George Washington had been captured? What if Hitler had been assassinated? How would our world have been different?
Use your imagination but stay within the constraints of the real world. This is not a History Channel project so no ancient aliens, miracles, zombies, doomsday preppers, magic pawn shops, mystical ice road truckers or anything preposterous.
Describe the change and explain why it happened.
Describe at least 2 major events that you imagine would have been the result of this “what if?” scenario and make sure they are connected and make sense.
III. What about the research and length parameters?
This project should be at least 1000-1500 words long, (that’s like 4 pages double spaced if you count in pages).
You must include a Bibliography with a list of your sources. You need to have 10 sources for the research part of the assignment—you do not need to use research for the Alternate History part since you will be using your imagination and stuff.
The sources need to be 5 books (the textbook does not count, but you may use e-books), 3 scholarly journals, and 2 websites (university or museum websites, not Wikipedia).
You must have at least 2 citations per event, so at least 10 total—5 events plus 1 turning point.
I prefer that you use the Chicago style for citations, but you may use MLA if that is more familiar.
I have chosen the Cuban Missile Crisis as my main topic and have locked down the 5 causes.
